Some traditional/folk songs I like

  • I riden så - This song is part of a ballad: Den förtrollade barnaföderskan("The Enchanted Woman in Labour") originating from the 1600s. The longer story according to wikipedia is about a woman - assumed to be married and having moved into her husband's household - who asks her mother-in-law how long women are pregnant, getting the answer 40 weeks and 7 years. Possibly the mother-in-law cast a spell on her causing the pregnancy to be that long. And so when the pregnant woman is reaching the end of that time and getting in labour, she wants to go home to her father. She arrives, though in pain, giving birth to two 7 year and 40 weeks old children. It isn't clear if she dies in childbirth or was just gravely maimed. The children wish for revenge against their grandmother who told their mother that she would be pregnant that long.
  • Trøllabundin - In the lyrics she says she is spellbound by a "Galdramaður", which means the person that does a "galdr", which is a word in Old Norse with two meanings, one is song and the other is incantation, spell. The verb "galana" means to sing or to cast a spell. So she was struck by the Singer/Sorcerer's spell/ song. And then proceeds to sing/ enchant us with her own galdr.
  • Rosna Livada can be translated to "Dewy Meadow" and tells the story of a woman mourning the loss of her beloved in war. In this version, her sorrow is translated into anger, with a furious outcry directed towards the "evil forces."
  • Lu Rusciu te lu mare is a folk song that originated in Gallipoli, Apulia, many centuries ago, which tells the impossible love story between a noble lady and a soldier, in an age where no one could escape their roles.
  • Trece-un nouraș pe sus is a song about longing for love after being heartbroken. The lyrics tell a story of love that was tender but ended with abandonment, leaving the lover feeling like a stranger and crying alone. Natural imagery, such as a little cloud passing in the sky conveys the emotional pain of love lost.
  • Pecador, contempla - Basically a badass song meant to spur the listener to repent before divine judgement
