i don’t get how you can have a sick heart and lungs, hear "don’t do stupid shit" from your doctor at every check-up, and still keep smoking and drinking. maybe you find some twisted satisfaction in saying "i'm sick", because it works as an excuse when someone asks you to do something you just don’t feel like doing. "i'm sick" sounds better than "i'm lazy", doesn’t it?

how can someone only feel positive emotions after drinking alcohol? without it, you’re constantly on edge. why do you hop from one bar to another just to drink until no one can understand what you’re even saying anymore? you start to choke - literally and metaphorically - on this void inside you that’s so heavy you feel no shame, and instead you throw all your bitterness at the people who actually care, even when you're sober again?

i seriously hope i never get addicted like that. i hope i never fall that low.

when someone is addicted it usually isnt about feeling good, its about feeling comfortable. Most addictions don't exactly start by choice, someone may have severe trauma or other mental health issues and get into substances to numb the pain. after a long time of doing it, it feels more comfortable to be miserable than it is to recover. substance addiction isnt something you can just choose to stop, its a complex process and depending on what substance you are doing, quitting can actually kill you (ie, if you suddenly cold turkey alcohol after drinking for so long, your body goes into shock)
some addicts may feel happy being considered "sick" rather than have to deal with the pain of living everyday, some addicts may be physically or mentally unable to quit
whatever the reason may be, I will always 100% advocate for the respect and sympathy towards addicts, harm reduction saves lives more than going cold turkey does

it's awful. i also feel for those people and i know it's a complex topic, and i'm not judging anyone - i wrote that post purely from the perspective of someone who's witnessing it happen to someone close, and it's affecting me too. i wouldn't wish addiction on anyone, or having to watch someone you care about go through it
