Modding my 3DS

Greetings friends I have decided to grace you with another post (silly)

I’m modding my aqua blue 3DS today! It just came in the mail from Japan so it’s Japanese region locked, meaning I need to hack to change the language (that isn’t bad, I was gonna do that anyway)

I thought I’d share the process since some of you might be curious!

1. Ordering the 3ds

Most 3ds in the USA are sooo expensive. 200-300 dollars just for one used. Japanese ones on the other hand? 100-150 usually. I got mine off EBay from a company that supports the homeless and children’s charities in Japan

2. Custom themes

Before modding, I decided I wanted to make a custom theme. Something dark blue that feels kind of mysterious with a pixel art vibe to go with the aqua color of the DS itself.

I went on Pinterest and found cool pixel art then downloaded this cool theme editor called Usagi Theme editor and put the pics/templates together in Krita

After that, I made custom folder icons and put it all together with custom colors for each asset

3. Sound effects for custom themes

I made the music on my spacehey profile, so I thought, why not make the music for my 3DS background? I went for something frutiger aero since it’s Nintendo and something that went with the vibe of my dark blue nature pixel background (yeah long descriptions I know)

Then, I had to make sound effects which was easy lol

(You don’t have to do this step unless you’re musically inclined)

4. Sd card! I used a 64 gb SD card which I will upgrade soon to a 128 gb one. Upgrading is as simple as copy pasting everything from one SD card to another so that was chill

Loaded it up with everything, put it in, and boom, modded

5. Then I had to change the region (didn’t have to, didn’t feel like learning Japanese though) and add pretendo to play online plus all my TOTALLY LEGITIMATE GAME COPIES *dont sue me nintendo*

Pretty fun day!
