irréversible était fou

yapping ab a french film which has graphic topics and stuff. link is unrelated.

 https://youtu.be/QxsXTLNedMI?feature=share

as you can see its called irreversible, which is actually pretty clever bc the movie is in reverse chronological order. its directed by gaspar noé, who is french, who also directed love, which is a ifykyk kinda film.

from what ik its about 2 men who go on a revenge quest for a woman that theyre clearly close with. unfortunately what theyre avenging was her brutal assault. to put it lightly.

theres a very infamous scene dubbed the “tunnel scene”. i dont wanna elaborate on that. but like, its in there. its THE scene yk.

okay so i just watched it like a few hours ago at the time of writing this. i blocked the tv w my hand during the tunnel scene. it really was 9mins or something. and its all in one take. my friend said it was pretty bad. i kinda already knew that. bc reading the subtitles was bad enough, and being able to see the screen through my fingers. it was pretty intense. wouldnt recommend.

the fact that its told in reverse really adds to it. it slowly gets more upbeat, but i just kept saying damn, because i felt so bad for the characters.

do yk how explicit a movie has to be for THE FRENCH to walk outta the theater tho. i dont blame them.

some people praise how unfiltered it is others think its sick and unnecessary.

I'd consider Irreversible Noe's real big debut. He must have loved the attention it got at Cannes.

All Noe movies are like that, except maybe Vortex. Enter the Void and Climax for example even cover topics like incest or child death. I know those are disturbing and people would hate him naturally but it's indisputable that he is a cinematic genius. I recommend you watch Climax next- I think it's his best.

There was a quote from him, about directors who make movies about sick, freak shit actually being really stable in real life. Keep that in mind while you watch, Noe's a treasure.

I appreciate that you watched one of the most impactful films in Gaspar Noé’s cinematography. I’ll start by saying that the film itself is experimental and does not belong to the New Wave (Nouvelle Vague). The New Wave is a cinematic artistic movement that featured directors like Jean-Luc Godard, Truffaut, and others during the 1960s and 70s.

Going back to Noé, I really liked the film, it’s one of those movies that opened my eyes to the rotten and sick society we live in. The tunnel scene was deliberately chosen to create a sense of discomfort and unease, precisely to make us reflect on the things that can happen to us even in everyday life.

It’s no coincidence that Gaspar Noé conveys this message through the film’s imagery:

“Irreversible. Because time destroys everything. Because certain actions are irreparable. Because man is an animal. Because the desire for revenge is a natural impulse. Because most crimes go unpunished. Because the loss of a loved one strikes like lightning. Because love is a source of life. Because history is written entirely with sperm and blood. Because premonitions do not change the course of things. Because time reveals everything. The worst and the best.”

I recommend reading this review to truly understand Noé’s intent. (translate it in English bc its in Italian)

the film being in reverse was such a genius choice i actually went back and watched it again but without covering my eyes and didnt even notice the man who walked in the tunnel and walked back out during *that* scene
as intense and uncomfortable that scene was i feel like it was necessary for it to be shot the way it did
i wish i could watch the entire film for the first time again

to be honest i just watched the first minute about the SA, then i just skipped, bc i know that's too disturbing, i watched this film when i was 16 yo so it was quite traumatic, my fav scene is the first one, when her ex bf start to smash the rapist's face with the fire extinguisher and the scene when they were dancing at the party. I somehow love that movie a lot, but for now, its not in my to-watch movie list

Ah yes, youve discoved the genre of French Extremity.

There is an fastastic book on the whole topic called; "Films of the New French Extremity: Visceral Horror and National Identity" By Alexandra West. So Alexandra West regualey writes for many big horror magazine like Rue Morgue, Diabolique, And Co Hosts a horror podcasts so she know her shit.

Ahnyay ere is a description of her book;

"The films of the New French Extremity have been reviled by critics but adored by fans and filmmakers. Known for graphically brutal depictions of sex and violence, the subgenre emerged from the French art-house scene in the late 1990s and became a cult phenomenon, eventually merging into the horror genre where it became associated with American torture porn.

Decidedly French in flavor, the films seek to reveal the dark side of French society. This book provides an in-depth study of New French Extremity, focusing on such films as Trouble Every Day (2001), Irreversible (2002), Twentynine Palms (2003), High Tension (2003) and Martyrs (2008). The author explores the social implications of cinematic cruelty presented not as "violent films" but as "films about violence."

Irreversible is a challenging watch. IIRC they used the same low-bass frequency that an earthquake emits during the first 20 minutes of the movie to make the audience extra uncomfortable (on top of the SA scene).

Climax is much better imo. Enter The Void is cool- just very long.
