ATTENTION FELLOW BRITS
well, them meddling mps finally got their way :o
as of this week, all user-to-user online services (which ofc includes spacehey.com) are now vastly regulated by ofcom and with almost 68 million britons in the uk alone (as of a 2022 census), that's arguably a pretty sizable chunk of internet traffic
so what is this bill and how does it work
firstly, all the information about it can be found here
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_Safety_Act_2023
simply put, anyone owning a website where potentially harmful content is hosted (and don't even get me started because a few stray trolls aside, this site is pretty much an all round cozy safe space) is that they must implement a regimented age verification process or face substantial fines and/or penalties (i.e. their site being blocked to the whole of the united kingdom and afaik, its overseas territories)
which ofc include the falkland islands, cayman islands, a whole bunch of caribbean islands etc. etc.
now i don't know an, other than he was my very first spacehey fren (and ily for that bro omgg)
but considering he doesn't have the time or capital to keep his site from sinking every other day
do you really think he can afford to pay these huge compliance fees and install le brit gubberment approved software on his early 2000s retro myspace server???
no, i didn't think so either
anyway yeah, that's about the gist of it
we're cooked </3
btw frens, in polar opposite to this unholy doom n gloom blog is a bran new post with a free blog layout!! i mean, we may be getting throttled by the gubberments here but that ain't gonna stop us from having fun and goofing about right? RIGHT??!!
see this blog here for more deets:
ty for reading mwahhh ily all xoxo

at time of posting, there are close to 500k signatures on the petition to repeal the law
almost HALF A HECKING MILLION DISGRUNTLED BRITS
and what did the government respond with???
"The Government has no plans to repeal the Online Safety Act, and is working closely with Ofcom to implement the Act as quickly and effectively as possible to enable UK users to benefit from its protections."
ffs ;__;
this doesn't apply to other countries right? also where is the link to the petition? i want to sign it for my british friends on here 3 R.I.P. the internet 1983-2025

it is especially evil because it only really benefits big tech since everything is getting super-centralised :|

the gov is notorious for just completely ignoring and saying no to highly supported campaigns and petitions created by the british public on petition.parliament.uk, and they get away with it every time. they've been doing it for years :c

nb: for anyone largely affected by this, there are some things you can do
1. get involved with the petition to repeal this law (see link in blog)
2. write to your local mp/councilor outlining your concerns
the more that get involved, the more they have sit up and take notice
don't forget that this affects them too, and i'm sure there are a handful of lesser heard mps that would love a big pile of constituency grievances to actually get some voices heard
(or at the very least, you would hope so anyway xoxo)

sadly we know why it's actually happening. this child protection bs is just an excuse for them to say "oh uhhhh you don't want the chiiiiiiiildrennnnn to be saaaaafe?? you monsssterrrr" oh yeah sure too bad I know propaganda too well. Just the other day I did a search on deviantART. (twt too, but we don't talk about that site) Just an average search. nothing nsfw related at all. you know what wasn't gone? literally illegal, harmful and traumatizing content. which I even reported some weeks ago. you know what WAS gone? fanarts. legal fanarts. it's like that certain employee who harassed me away from a discord group, with made-up excuses that I debunked under SECONDS. she was soooo hyperfixating on the lies, mentally abusing me. but when I asked her to help me report illegal shit / since they own the copyrights and such / she kept looking for excuses to not help. wow. that's how much they want to protect the children.

I didn't pay attention to the news because I honestly thought they were just going to ban porn for minors and not social media and kids that are online a lot will get pass it's going to be a new streisand effect
mars!
tbh as a minor in the us this isn't really helping anyone. my best friend lives in the uk and now im getting whattsapp just to talk to her cause everything else is unavailable for her now :(( like its not protecting anyone.

This is 1984 line by line. Gives me goosebumps.

they're trying to centralize the internet, this has already inadvertently spilled over into other countries so this isn't exclusive to the Uk. If this trend continues or if this fails, governments might start using ISP's as leverage (¬_¬")
Radioactive_Puppy
To be honest, if this extends or gets worse, it might be time to pack our bags and leave the internet OR create someting similar to the internet.
Either way, lets give hackers some time to make them see how wrong they are about all of this when it backfires, plus, if this goes to worse, manifestations may start, and people will just generally use VPNS, remember, theyre using VPNS and charging it on tax money, so they cannot completely ban them. In fact, i've heard people are moving out of the UK thanks to this, its probably just rumors, i wouldnt be surprised though.
In fact, we should start using Tor (yk, onion) to access the internet, and if thats not gonna work i recommend Molvat, its a VPN, you can make it completely private by paying with bitcoin or other options and accessing Onion, its the best VPN in my opinion.
Have a nice day!

i've never loved vpn's more

the thing thats annoying me that NO ONE in the media talks about is how this kills off competition for big tech. big established social media sites have the resources to establish age verification and/or take the risk of being fined and going to court about it, wheras the little guys like spacehey can't, and no start-up social media is going to have that kind of cash. ahdgshdgajfhdshfsdfhg also love the blog layout woahh!!!!
SHINIQUAM
I read somewhere that UK politicians are now using VPNs to deal with their own legislation and are charging their subscription fees to the taxpayer, which makes me lose braincells every time I think about it..
also not to mention the censorship of games by payment service companies like PayPal, visa and Mastercard, other countries also trying to implement this law including in the USA, it seems like July/August this year is really popular for just the censorship of the internet altogether and makes me really worried for its future
