The UK has implemented the new Online Safety Act, which I noticed came into place yesterday though I’m not sure when it actually did. The act is NOT about your online safety though, and is being used as a tool for control, surveillance, censorship, and a way for fascism to be easily consumed by people like you.
If our government truly cared about the children in the country then they wouldn’t be cutting benefits, promoting the idea that lunches shouldn’t be free in schools. They’d be helping the rise of poverty and children in poverty, they wouldn’t outsource the ID verification to third parties - they’d have their own government ID verification system. This act is NOT only censoring porn, but many other things such as:
• Art deemed too “mature”
• Forums on mental health and self harm
• Forums on domestic abuse and sexual assault
• Online LGBTQ+ spaces
• War related news
• Sexual education sites
• Blocking videos of protests
• Certain articles on Wikipedia
Edit: As of 6th August 2025, YouTube has started detecting if people are using VPNs. Although this has been hit-and-miss and isn’t happening to everyone, myself and a few others have received a pop up saying that YouTube has detected we are using VPNs on certain videos and shorts. This is censorship and an invasion of privacy & freedom. I can no longer access certain subreddits without my VPN, watch certain YouTube videos WITH a VPN, and Spotify also wants my ID? Yeah, I’m going back to using physical media and dodgy sites for music now…
This Act is also a huge safety and privacy concern. Outsourcing our IDs, phone numbers, faces, and even our credit cards just to “verify we’re over 18” means we are at a massive risk of an extremely dangerous data breach, to the point where people can and will steal our identities using these things. Data breaches happen all the time on a plethora of sites, and is usually just passwords, emails, and names — but to now have this include thousands, if not millions, of IDs etc. makes it a whole larger issue.
This is NOT about porn or “protecting the kids”, if it was then they wouldn’t tackle the route of the problem which is the industry itself. But they won’t, and you and I both know they won’t. This is censorship and just another step closed to fascism in our country. I don’t even watch porn, I never have and I doubt I ever will (I’m the biggest AO3 truther guys istg) but this act will and IS encouraging people to go to more dangerous and possibly more violent sites.
This is not about protecting children, this is not about your safety online. This is about censorship. The government does not care about you.

You can sign this petition from parliament.uk calling to repeal the Online Safety Act here! As well as signing this petition, I heavily recommend writing to or emailing your local MP regarding the act and showing how it is affecting you and your community. If the act is affecting you, you can use a VPN such as Proton which you can find on the AppStore here OR you can find ways to bypass all of this via this lovely Neocities website!Also, check out this great blog post by user myrdin! The UK Government has decided to not repeal the Online Safety Act despite the privacy concerns and the public’s interest. We had hit just over 380,000 signatures when they [the government] basically said ‘lol nope.’ But please don’t give up hope! I urge you reading this to keep sharing the petition and continue getting people to sign the petition. It has hit over half a million signatures and we are still not being listened to, this is no longer democracy if we the people aren’t being listened to.

something that shows how shit this law is: there is a petition on the UK GOV site to repeal the online safety act. the goal was 100,000 signs, and it is already at like 200,000 in a matter of days. The deadline to this petition is in OCTOBER, so imagine how many signs it'll have by then. But even then, will the gov actually give a fuck about our opinion? No. but it's worth trying.

You are so much better at getting to the point in FAR fewer words than me, lol- But I entirely agree. This isn't about protecting children, but the government will use that as a shield. It's the best scapegoat they have after all. I'm so glad you linked too the petition too :3

really disturbing how many people outside the uk have been celebrating this like it only affects 'the gooners' - or saying it protects children in any way... every 12 year old i've ever known would be able to install a vpn and get around this or just steal their parents' id

Yes! You are now required to do the verification process on any “nsfw” reddit channel EVEN if it doesn’t include porn as it’s classed as mature — this includes LGBT+ forums on there etc. Because it’s targeting mature topics, this is also including things such as the genocide in gaza which also requires you to do the verification on sites like Reddit.
