emo has got to be one of the most debated subgenres ever.
metals up there too but idrk too much abt that. i wish i knew enough to dish out on them too bc metalhead elitists and emo elitists are 2 cheeks of the same ass.
but i digress
theres always so much discourse over whats emo and whats not. “ooh american footballs not emo theyre math rock, sunny day real estate this sunny day real estate that”. yes im looking at you person who proudly announced that my chemical romance is post-hardcore or something not emo. like dont get me wrong, they ARENT. but theres a difference between spreading the history of the genre you love so much, and referring firstwave emotional hardcore bands to give perspective on how emo musics evolved or just to share your interest.

i feel like being anal about emo music gives some people a massive boner. is emo music not allowed to be broad ? and god forbid someone whos emo also listens to emo adjacent bands or oooooo pop punk oh no anything but pop punk. nah but fr pop punk has got to be as hated as nu-metal was in the 90s. listening to that shit doesnt make you a bitch btw. cap’n jazz and pg 99 are goated, dont get me wrong but you (im saying you subjectively) dont needa have a heart attack bc someone listens to “third wave emo”.

i dont see goths crying bc someones jamming to what is love by haddaway or rock lobster. as a matter of fact they love that shit. be more like goths.
i wouldve hated bein emo back then yall wouldve tore me up for listening to modern baseball. but its not that much different now because SOME of those people never changed. no shade.
oh and last thing i LOVE LOVE LOVE 2nd wave emo fashion omg mwah mwah mwah chefs kiss. but let the third wave emos have their fun.

"goth, grunge, etc" atp i just wave my big ass "alternative" flag and call it my umbrella term bc people will pick at anything you label; they don't care if you're labeling YOURSELF. they will tell you you're wrong. tf?

I really think that genres themselves are a stupid concept, and debating whether or not something belongs to a genre literally changes nothing other than 'othering' a fanbase. Genres themselves are almost entirely useless; the only benefit they give is a quick "hmm, maybe I might like this, because it's 'shoegaze' and I like shoegaze." It's an overview. In actual music circles with people who already know the music, genres have no point. People who are so toxic over it are dumb.
