technology can be fun

i very often find myself being upset because of a very relevant topic in modern society

technology just isnt fun

but the thing is, thats wrong!! technology is utterly incredible, why is it that most of it just doesnt seem to spark any passion in people?

well, its because of capitalism, technology is a commodity and is treated as such by those who provide it to the people, it is not made with the intent of being a fun tool, just a device which creates profits for investors and advertisers

i think i truly realized just how cool tech is when i first dived head first into linux by installing arch, i was suddenly so in awe of how complex a computer is, i was just baffled at the amount of things i had to take into account the level of control i was given made me so oh so excited

suddenly my computer, which was a machine i wrestled with in order to control and change to my liking became... fully mine, everything, from the bootloader to the graphical enviroment, everything, down to the smallest detail functioned EXACTLY as i wanted it to, no longer was my OS something that i just apathetically accepted, it became a tool, made with my determination and struggle to get it to work, i had to spend weeks reading about the ins and outs of linux from wikis crafted by an incredible amount of people, not only the wikis but the majority of software i had as well, programs stopped being just a means to an end, it was an incredible tool made by people, not by some shadowy corporation with methods just as unclear as them, they were the culmimation of cooperation done by indivuals who seeked nothing else other than to provide a program that worked and nothing else, and i could see into it, the guts of software! i was beyond fascinated! youre telling me that the programs i use are to me an incomprehensible mesh of languaje which is similar to english but has an entire different world behind it?!, holy shit..!!

FOSS is the thing that makes computing incredible, it is beyond amazing what you can do with computers when you remove the grubby, uncaring hands of corporations from it.

now, i must recognize that i am very biased while writing this, not everyone cares!, not everyone get autistic hyperfixations that make them go insane about something for like half a year... but still! maybe they would care if they could rest!, if they were free from the grasp of life under capitalism, maybe more people could have the time, to realize technology is truly amazing, computers and technology do not have to be a constant source of stress and dissapointment, it can be so so much more and i hope i put into words just how much i care about this.

I don't think capitalism is inherently bad, but the fact that the companies that got in early gaining a monopoly get rewarded for making their products worse is sad. In my opinion the only reason people use Windows now days is the app support. Unlike Linux and Mac users you never hear Windows users say they like Windows itself, it's always the fact that certain apps only work on their computer or that their computer just came with Windows and it just works for them. It seems that a lot of complacency from the companies end is reflected in the users. People use Google because its the default search engine on most browsers and it works. Many people only use YouTube as their sole platform for long term content as that's were most of the content is. That's why looking into smaller projects and companies is so intriguing. And its also the reason why so many people seem to find it hard to let go of the old. Because whilst your iPhone is hard to repair an old iPod Classic is easy to repair. And if you look at all the Windows users many of them find it hard to let go of the version they are on as Microsoft just seems to be aimlessly trying to figure out how to add a useless change to the next iteration of their operating system that no one asked for. I think that with your point of foss and community support that is great. As someone that enjoys video games what people have done in relation to supporting things that the creators have long since forgotten about is amazing. I think another issue is that big companies eventually figure out how to optimize things to squeeze every little cent out of something. And sadly that has occurred to the internet. I honestly find it sad how little regulation from governments there is in relation to how addicting there services can be and how they are accessed and who is accessing them. I mean where I live the government is raising the age that is required for users of social media to 16 on every platform except YouTube. I mean why is YouTube special? Because they are the only mainstream video site. Its just sad what these companies can get away with man. I think free and open source things can help this issue. But I also think buying from smaller companies or buying older used products is also great. But most people aren't going to do that. And that is the problem. Maybe some day that will change, hopefully things will be better.

o7, i believe we are already on the right track to making things better, as microsoft tries to squeeze more features that noone asked for and keeps raising the bar of access for win11, people are getting tired of it, just recently a friend of mine decided to move onto EndeavourOS instead of updating to win11 and they have already expressed that endeavour's ease of customization has been a nice change of pace. and ive seen more ppl on the internet give linux a try

ty for replying also :p

I feel like one negative that not many people have noticed is how more people are switching from playing games on a dedicated device to their pc. And due to the fact that many games don't work on linux makes it hard for a lot of people to switch. Like none of my friends would switch due to things like the lack of gamepass support and many mainstream games having anti cheat. And them not wanting to go through the hassle of setting up a VM. But hey maybe in a decade Linux gaming will do what PC did to console and take a lot of people in certain groups and spread as peoples friends use it. Also it would be nice if more people outside of the FOSS community would use Odysee.
