Performance anxiety among athletes

Performance anxiety among athletes is something that is not talked about enough! It can be crippling and inhibit even the most elite athletes. I am no expert, but as someone who struggles with performance anxiety, I thought I’d share some ways that have helped me cope.

Set small, attainable goals for each game and even each at bat. By doing this, I am able to focus on what I am trying to achieve rather than what could happen if I fail.

Practice visualization. In practice and in the days leading up to a track meet, game or event of the sport you are in. I visualize myself succeeding against the other runners on the track that I am running against. I get as specific as possible with the outcomes that I visualize and make a conscious effort to make all of those outcomes positive.

Rather than thinking of nerves as anxiety, reframe them as excitement. Create a routine. Having a routine to fall back on provides feelings of comfort and control.

BREATHE. Whenever I feel like my mind is clouded with negative thoughts, I take a deep breath and focus on what is right in front of me. Be present.

Athletes who struggle with anxiety are not weak-minded. You might not even know that they are struggling internally. Mental health MATTERS and learning how to help athletes who struggle with it can help these athletes reach their full potential.
