Watched - I Get Knocked Down

I Get Knocked Down Movie Poster

Background

Another consequence of me finding new channels on youtube. This time, its fairly recent with me following Mic The Snare. In the past 3 years, i've been wanting to get really into listening to more well known artists and expand my genre tastes, and Mr. Snare has been one of my go to sources for everything relating to music artists and the music industry. It was there I found three things:
  1. There was a band called Chumbawumba
  2. They made that one song that I sometimes hear on memes, internet music mashups, etc.
  3. Their front-man made a movie
You can find the video by Mic the Snare about Chumbawumba here. I Get Knocked Down felt like a good intersection of my interests: Growing Up, Niche Things, and Looking Past the Prime/Apex of Fame.

Thoughts

Admittedly, the most disappointing thing about this pseudo-documentary is that it did not go too far into each album, especially after I Get Knocked Down (the song), where they slowly transitioned to folk-music (whilst keeping that anarchist edge). I would've loved to see that, however what I did watch was still quite charming, and shockingly uplifting. The first half or so could be considered documentary, but with a surprisingly casual charm. It was kinda immersive? Like I was there with the band members reminiscing about the good ol days. The fact that the main narrator/character is Chumbawumba's now former frontman helped with this alot.

It was also, shockingly uplifting. When I watched Join or Die and read The Upswing, it felt like a calling. The world is increasingly in danger of slipping into the deep end, and its up to everyone, but especially younger generations, to get together and form connections again. This film draws parallels when it comes to the general worldview and the call to act. Arguably, it is more downer in how it views past actions to act against the injustices of the world. Once more, the more personal perspective of this film helps give it positive levity. We witness real human growth to act, which is not a knock against Join or Die, The Upswing, nor the person of focus of both piece, Robert Putnam. This way of tackling societal issues and yourself could only have come from someone who felt knocked down from their beliefs, something that Robert Putnam does not have, since in my opinion, his views have only gotten stronger, and his perseverance unwavering.

I Get Knocked Down (the film) oddly serves as the third entry in my journey to be more proactive and fight for what I believe in. For Chumbawumba's frontman, it was reconciling with doubts that what he did amounted to nothing, when it did mean something, and that not only young people still have that fire that previous generations have, but older people can rekindle that fire. That message left me grinning by the last couple of minutes of this film, all the way to that heartwarming credits, a compilation of covers on Chumbawumba's breakout hit, displaying the diversity and overwhelming reach that a song can have. It was beautiful

Recommendation

Fun fact, I watched this movie in bad quality. Not all niche streaming services are built the same. That I found out when I watched this on a different platform also offered for free by my library. Regardless, this was a fantastic and fun watch. Loved it even more by the end. I may even suggest you watch Join or Die and/or read The Upswing (Or Bowling Alone) to get that same sense of positivity and odd parallels between a famous Political Scientists, and a (at least former) Anarchist Front-Man.
