I was watching twin peaks and waiting for a game to download when I noticed something that stood out to me. There is a moment in which one of the characters (can't remember her name) is lying on a bed and praying. Not to god, but to the titular lead character Special Agent Cooper.
She says over and over "Special agent, please if you can hear me, please I need your help"
She beseeches him across space and time for his aid, calling out to him in desperate need. Now this is not a bad thing but it made me realize that this is something we have lost through our increased capacity to communicate across distance. Sad and lonely heart-struck girls(or boys) do not need to call out into the night for their lover to come to their aid. No longer is it necessary to cross the spiritual plane to reach those closest to us.
The world is better for it. It gives me great comfort to know that I can text my wife when we are apart. To know that reassurance is a phone call away. We are tethered always, not only through our souls but through the revolutionary power of the smart phone. Connected to each other by a network of satellites, data streams, and corporate interests.
I remember I used to feel as the girl did. The desperation surrounded my thoughts. As a child I would gaze out my window and imagine myself being saved from whatever problems I faced. I asked otherworldly forces to help me actualize my desires, to give me strength or knowledge.
People don't need to do that anymore. Man has crafted himself a deity that fits in your pocket. Laden with information, companionship, entertainment. We need not ever feel lonely or bored or without hope because we are all connected to a network which does not stop growing.
Have we lost something? There is such beauty to be found in a soul who sits idly in bed. Free from distractions, their thoughts drift. They attempt the impossible simply because they can. In those moments when our psychic messages are heard, we feel indisputably the effect our will can have on the universe.
