SoS Free DLC Update first impressions. (Games Playing Right Now #12)

Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker via Steam

I forgot about the Sea of Stars free DLC as something releasing this month so it was a nice surprise to see it release. I gave it a shot and it's been great so far. It seems like a really fun DLC for returning players not just for new content, but also some of the new changes like Combat 2.0 that was released in the Equinox update. I originally almost 100%ed the whole game before that update so I finally have a good excuse for trying some of the new changes without doing a whole new game.

In terms of the DLC, it starts off slow for returning players like me, but it gives plenty of warnings that the challenge will greatly increase. It defiantly does, not really because of the enemies but more so the commands. In the DLC, everything from the base game such as items and moves have been replaced. This is really good to keep the complexity low at first, especially since you don't need to look through your various cooked foods and equipment to figure out why you had them in the first place. However, the new moves have commands that are quite tough. Even some of the similar moves compaired to the base game have some differences that make things more complex. It's like a harder remix of the base game.

Spoiler Example

One such example is Zale's base attack now doing fire with physical when boosted rather than the original physical with fire when boosted. Valere on the other hand still has the equivalent types from the base game. This makes the solstice strike equivalent combo move different as well. Now it's types are fire and physical with moon when boosted regardless of which party member uses it.

I wonder what other stuff will be changed as well. I'll share more thoughts if anything interesting pops up. It is an RPG so it might just be the same pattern of gameplay to carry the story, but I think they would have some interesting experiences at some point.

Are you gonna say we should play Sea of Stars as well?

Actually, I'd say get this one if you don't mind playing an RPG for gameplay with a lite story. I personally like the game for what it is, but I have heard people complain about the dry dialog and other weird story and world problems. There are also a couple of other things that make it complicated, but it overall makes this a kind of game where you could be disappointed by it because of those complications. These are just the words of game reviews on Steam and videos, so take them with a grain of salt. Regardless, just know that Sea of Stars is a good game for whatever it is and it has plenty of fun surprises, especially if you are a Sabotage Studio nut like me.

With that out of the way, go play Sea of Stars.
