One of my good friends and I had a beach day today. We drove to the Washington Coast, it was a really beautiful drive there and back. I love our drives because we always have good conversations. This time I got to share with her one of my favorite podcasts, and that sort of led to me sharing more about that part of my life. And she talked about some of her troubles from the week and I had to opportunity to show her some empathy and encouragement. The fruits of quality time. On the way there, a baby black bear ran out into the road in front of my car and I came very close to hitting him but didn't.
When we got to our destination, we laid out on the warm sand, ate snacks, and watched the waves. I was grateful we had some sun even though the forecast was cloudy. It was quite windy though. There was this sweet young family with the cutest little baby learning to walk. He was wearing overalls and looked like a little man lol.
There were some pretty assertive seagulls catching kernels of popcorn that were being blown out of our hands by the wind, who shifted their attention to that other family when the kids started feeding them intentionally. It was then that the birb drama ensued. The female seagulls were all spread out in formation for maximum coverage catching the bread crumbs they were tossing out, while the male seagulls kept breaking formation to fight with one another. At one point a bald eagle swooped in over the water and was just gliding there minding his own business when a couple of crows showed up and started harassing him. One crow gave up and left but the other one kept at it for awhile. And then inexplicably, the entire flock of seagulls on the beach (including the males) pulled away from being fed by children to get up and chase the crow away from the eagle. And then the eagle landed in the wet sand and just stood there while a bunch of people tried to get selfies with him, until he eventually moved on. The seagulls just went back to the children. Birds are strange, yet fascinating creatures. Crows in particular seem to be generally assholes. Last year I saw a gang of crows attack an owl and steal his prey that he had just caught and killed.
After the beach, we walked around town and looked at the shops. My favorite place was a cute little bakery/deli. There was an old woman (a local) who came in to get her weekly bread and apparently they had run out of that particular kind so she said she'd be back tomorrow for it. We saw some pretty cool carved wood sculptures, one of which had a water spout coming out of it.
Then we came home. And I'm falling asleep again, so that's all I'll share for today. Goodnight.
