01/Apr/25 - Week 13 of 52
April 1st, week 13... No bad luck facing you here though, I don't know what I could do that would be at all funny, so just your normal dose of nerd shit!
And since I still can't write these, have another song to filll the space :0
Notable Observations
Total Observations: 143
Most numerous species: Dicyrtomina saundersi (10 observations)
Individual Interesting Observations
Wasp (Family Encyrtidae)
Tuesday (Mar 25th)

First proper Braconid wasp of the year! These are the wasps you never hear much about, and they're just incredible, the phone cam doesn't do it justice.
Araneus diadematus and Icheumonid Wasp larva
Wednesday (Mar 26th)

Speaking of wasps!!! On the slightly less beautiful flipside of these wasps, most are parasitic, this one of the spider. Found it in my room, on a web which was rather unusually placed, which I believe is a symptom of this parasite. The host was also quite sluggish, not reacting much. You can just see the larva of the wasp between the thorax and abdomen, which will eventually metamorphise into a larger, more recognisable adult, eating the spider...
Mosquito (Family Culicidae)
Wednesday (Mar 26th)

Sampled from a bucket of murky water, I turned up this shed exoskeleton! From a mosquito larva, which would have been living in the water just below the surface.
Common Field-Speedwell (Veronica persica)
Thursday (Mar 27th)

From the clip-on macro lens, can't recommend them enough! Get a cheap one off of eBay, they really are great, even if they're not 100% crisp
Megabunus diadema
Saturday (Mar 29th)

Finally! Been wanting to catch one of these for a while, just look at those eyelashes. I'm envious.
(Family Isotomidae)
Saturday (Mar 29th)

Wish I had:
1. A better photo of these
2. A genus/species level ID on them
They're brilliant little things from the garden, but unfortunately the require microscopy, which I'm not quite set up for yet. Give it a few weeks though... 👀
Sun Beetle (Amara sp.)
Sunday (Mar 30th)

Excuse the poor photo, brilliant little medium large ground beetle sunbathing on a fencepost, this is the stuff I hope I see more of this Spring and Summer
Sunday (Mar 30th)

On the frond of a fern, this is the leafmine left by the larva of this fly. Quite cool, not too often I see them in ferns!
Moss Springtail (Neanura muscorum)
Saturday (Mar 29th)

AAAAAA!!!! One from the bucket list! One of the Poduromorpha, real glubby bastard, 11/10, best rotting wood creature you can get
Entomobrya albocincta
Sunday (Mar 30th)

And to close off, the first springtail found in my new house. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I've moved house recently. expect some pretty different, and hopefully more frequent, cool finds in the coming months!

I'm a week behind, but more than happy for the update!! Seeing the spider with the larvae was a face of nature that needs to happen but... *shudder* Watched too many B-list horror flicks.
Congrats on moving! I can't wait to see what new observations you make in the coming months, I hope they are fun and exciting. <3
I'm a week behind in writing these too, and clearly days behind on reading these comments! Thanks, hopefully I'll have this written up by the end of today...
