Tomato plants!

Today I transplanted 51 tomato plants out of their starter tray and into bigger pots to put outside in mid April

I started them all from seed back in the beginning of February not expecting so many of them to get to this stage

I spent about 2 hours organizing them and putting them into their respective places today, but it was worth it!

For reference, the three seed packets I used to start these tomatoes were 2.99 each. 8.97 for all 51.

Is this worth it? Let’s do the math!

The price of a tomato plant at Walmart at their same sizes cost 4.68

4.58x51=233.58. This is obviously a substantial amount of money saved by starting the seeds myself.

I saved 224.61!

If you want to count the hours I spent on it, the garden cost for setup itself, etc, it would be a little more, but I don’t wanna calculate all that fun stuff. (If you really wanna get into it the garden cost like 200 to set up, fertilizer every year is a thing, and I spent like 4 hours this spring starting everything and doing stuff)

Each tomato plant will produce anywhere from 20-90 tomatoes. Let’s say one produces 25 for the sake of this.

25x51=1,275 tomatoes. There are 3-4 large tomatoes in one pound

It takes 35lbs of tomatoes to produce 7 quart jars of sauce.

1,275/4=318.75

318.75/35=9.107

9.107x7=63.749

That’s 63 quart jars of tomato sauce and one delicious spaghetti dinner!

Now, I usually can my tomato sauce in pints because we don’t really like it thick. If you take this into account, there are obviously 2 pints in 1 quart.

 2x63.749=127.498 jars of red sauce.

The cheapest pint of red sauce I could find on the Walmart site is 1.67

1.67x127.498=212.922

How much did I say I spent on the seeds again..? 8.97?

212.92-8.97=203.95

What do you think? Worth it?
