Making notes on what was done recently. I moved the very tiny tiny delicate mallow to a deeper (still VERY small) pot that drains better. I'm still not sure if it'll survive. Then I planted a six pack with bladderpods, one seed per 4 of them and two seeds per the last 2. I tried to record the soil mix, it says on my phone: 3 parts weird dg mix from walking path, 2 parts orchid potting mix, 1 part perlite.
If that sounds not. ideal. i mean yeah its ok. I'm out of cactus mix, native plants grow weirdly well in dg, and I don't exactly know what's in my dg mix- that's decomposed granite- and the orchid potting mix is like broken down bark with some other stuff so the drainage is pretty good.
So, Peritomea arborea in, with a little sign marking the date as 5/25.
Fennel. Today I removed the last of it from the front yard of the Sustainability Center at a nearby community college. It's invasive here and their front yard has some tricky areas where they've clearly tried to put in native plants but don't have the manpower (or knowhow? I'm not sure?) to make sure they're not overwhelmed. It sucked to remove and it'll probably come back BUT it won't be as bad, because previously they had been controlling them by cutting or pulling just the tops off, and I went around and tried to get all the roots out. Wasn't always successful but at least got a few inches underground and whacked at the thing with the hari knife pretty aggressively.
Last, that leaves the Abysmal Weed Situation which is at the section of native plants near the Learning Garden. I went to try and remove the dandelions BUT the shed for the Learning Garden had already been locked up and I grievously underestimated the compacted-ness of the soil and the strength of these dandelion clusters. Better luck next time!! I DID however get a bunch of burr clover out before it set those prickly seed things and I think I found Clarkia seedlings in the middle??!?!? (if you're wondering who put those there U///U... yours truly ordered some Clarkia ungiculata this fall...;) I also found a baby Palmers mallow!! Yipee!
goin back with a good ol hari knife to the dandelions next week! I need to do some non-native food gardening next week as well.. and I really need to get to the point of making interpretive plaques for the native plants next to the Learning Garden. Toodles
