Wednesday Goals

I've been thinking about taking care of this area in the park more seriously lately.

It's an area that was planted next to a food garden to have native plants but there hasn't been a lot of followthrough in terms of care. There's a lot of issues with weeds and it's kind of hard to tell if there used to be more things or if there's irrigation or what.

Weed issues, in brief: lot of nonnative grasses, dandelions & co., mint(!!! how did that get here!!), notoscorum (BOOOO HISS), those yellow burr clovers. Obviously, the notuscorum situation is bad. Obviously, I'm one body and I can't fix it. I try to mitigate it by cutting off seed heads & flowers. So sad it's not tasty. The clovers.. I could probably cut down before they start to set seed? idk might even be good for the soil. Not sure if they'll regrow from the corms or whatev.

The most doable is the dandelion, actually. They don't clump up like the grasses do and they're in a patch in the center that should be easy to get to. No one walks on the soil (to be honest, I don't even feel entirely comfortable doing so), so it's generally pretty easy to pull things out. So I'm thinking on Wednesday I'll go in there with a hari knife and pop the dandelions out of the ground.

Then I'll have a space. Which.. in a way I feel like I might not put anything in until the fall. Because summer planting isn't ideal for native plants and I don't have anything large enough rn that would likely survive in that area.

Roots, I might try tea again, I did it really bad last time and it managed to be not only undercooked but also bitter and it tasted like pennies LOL so we'll see.

YAY ok so there's a LOT of possibilities! I currently have a few veeerryy small Apricot Mallows (they're in individual serving yogurt cups small) and they would do well given that there is already another mallow nearby. But I also have a bunch of seeds for bladderpod bushes which grow in the area and would add a different color to the patch! and it might be kinda nice just to up the diversity bc there's not a whole lot of plants to begin with. So that's what I'm leaning towards.
The California bladderpod is Cleomella arborea btw. It's evergreen and it has TONS of yellow flowers when it blooms. It's one that I've seen on hikes nearby and been really amazed by the sheer amount of flowers and pollinator activity. Now I just have to germinate it lol
