god it just gets worse and worse it actually hurts. If Thomas Nachlik wasn't the artist on this run i would be so much less interested his absolutely flawless illustration of my two favorite 90s detectives has made me not as upset with this run as i was originally. The last storyline was the same repurposed basic detective story except everyone that was in the wrong just died at the end and they never addressed it, not to mention that it was just a standalone twitch story essentially, which, i love twitch don't get me wrong, but i just love seeing them as a pair. This storyline has been a better with having the two working together, but twitch is once again off the force like he always is, give him a break man. And don't even start me with how Sam as a character is just all wrong, i am very biased because my favorite depiction of both of them is from the animated tv show, which i'm aware doesn't reflect their depictions in the comics, but ive also read the sam and twitch stand-alone comics over and over and theres such a stark contrast in how the two interact and are characterized now compared to even just the last run in the 2010s. The two argued yeah, but its just so annoying now because its like its the only conflict farlane can think to put in the story other than previously mentioned story beats, the two were a genuinely enjoyable duo that clashed yet still worked together so well in the early runs, and im all for developing and changing characters overtime but it just pains me to see them depicted in such a way. And do not get me started on Twitch's wife, get her out of here already!!! theyve divorced or 'gone on break' like every other damn issue, and dialing up her absolute hatred for Sam to the point that he cant even speak to Twitch in her presence without her screaming her lungs out is just so stupid and it gets to repetitive in this run specifically, i cannot recall a time in other comics that this has happened to such an extent, and i will be rereading all the old ones later just to find specific examples and to hopefully rekindle my interest and love for this duo. They have changed sam from the genuinely determined moral cop that yes is short tempered but usually never got to crazy thanks to twitch or just his own common sense, and now they have zoomed in on that one aspect, i mean really? throwing some guy out of the window for threatening the literal drug dealer you're talking to?? at a restaurant?? And i suppose yeah Twitch is not there to be the rational guy in that moment but i just felt like it was so unnecessary (and i LOVE when Sam gets to beat people up its always my favorite- him beating the shit out of Banks in the tv show is my favorite thing ever and i can quote that whole scene to a T) All in all, i love the art and i love these characters so much despite the obvious writer flaws, and i also recognize that Sam & Twitch has NO fanbase either, i had to request that my local shop order me copies bc he only had two or three people buying them other than me, but i wont take small viewership as an excuse for lazy writing, hand them over to me, Todd, i promise i could understand these characters better, since you've seen to forgotten how to write them. (Ily todd mcfarlane dont kill me please im only a weird teen nerd obsessed with two stupid guys from your hit series Spawn)
Also, mrs Chang? seriously man just bring back my girl lisa woo from the tv show atp
Anyways, for fun, heres my Sam & Twitch figures, and some of my favorite moments of them to prove that i am indeed a real fan and not just a hater! (some are here to prove my points)
