Thoughts on creature commandos

I'm kinda late to the party but here are my thoughts:

It's like guardians of the galaxy meets suicide squad, literally. James Gunn is the creator but it's like a sequel to the suicide squad. The characters are cool, they all have sad backstories, they don't shy away from showing how brutal they were, but they were done in ways that make sense and contribute to the development of the characters.

I also like the themes of female autonomy with the bride's backstory. she was born destined to be Frankenstein's bride but she hates his guts and he's a creepy stalker who's been chasing her for literal centuries.

I've seen this too many times in media where the guy basically annoys the girl into going out with him and wears her down even after she continually says no. This encourages dudes irl to do the same and normalizes/romanticizes being an obsessive creepazoid, I hate media that does that so I like how he's portrayed as pathetic but also dangerous and volatile.

The fight scenes are so good, it's got that classic guardians style w a funky lil song in the back while shit is going down. I've seen other media try to replicate this but few do it on the level of James Gunn movies/series imo

The thing the others get wrong is that they think they can j pick a random fun song and it'll work but they aren't choreographed well enough. In creature commandos however, the songs are not only fitting for each scene (eg: coin-operated boy for GI Robot's fight scene) but all the big explosions and gunshots are on beat. My fav fight scenes are the GI robot fight scene and the 'start wearing purple for me' fight scene (cool song btw). There's plenty of gore, I like when their heads explode in particular.

Another thing I love is when Dr. Phosphorus j melts people's faces off, it looks so cool.

My only thing is that this is the first season but other than Nina and bride, the characters dynamics with each other aren't focused on too much.

eg, in guardians we know that rocket and quill are always making jabs at each other because before gaurdians, rocket was used to being the boss between him and groot, on top of him being proud of his skills in engineering and mechanics, so he although he liked quill he was kinda irritated when he'd try and tell him what to do, even if it made sense. In creature commandos, they do show their dynamics but they don't go into it like that.

I'm not mad about it though, I know it's because this season is more about j introducing these characters to the viewers and helping us understand them as individuals. Hopefully we get some more elaboration on their interpersonal dynamics in s2. The characters themselves are fleshed out and interesting.

It's funny, it's fast-paced, it has depth and lots of violence. If u like that then definitely check it out.

Really good analysis, will have to fully watch it, I like how indepth you went on certain aspects! I really liked weasel, felt really bad for him.

Thank you! And yes, weasel's backstory is so sad. I think that people who are often misjudged for their actions can relate to the creature commandos. Like how many people who can't defend themselves verbally might get wrongly accused like weasel.

Someone in a yt comment pointed out that GI's story resonates for some veterans and how n*zis try to indoctrinate them by preying on their loneliness and loss of purpose

Oh yes one note on something I did not like: I know that many romani people consider g*ps* to be a slur so I did not appreciate them using it so freely in the show. Idk if someone who's actually romani was the va or something but we should not continue the normalization of its use in media today.
