February Book Review (more like rambling of a madman)

my dumbass forgot to tell yall on the last blog post that i read the magic tree house #16, hour of the olympics this month. when i went to barnes & noble to pick up some TMH books (10, 16, and 18), going to the kids section and looking at where the TMH books were at... i remember thinking: damn they are so THIN and that's it??

yeah, 7 year old me sure tricked me into thinking these books were long. i remember reading some of them as a little bastard and visualizing the scenes like they were full-blown movies. i swear, they were so intense and awesome back then. #16 was such a banger, my favorite TMH book out of any that I've read in my childhood. now its... small in my hands, not as good as i remember but hey it was a fun reread. still amazing as ever.

i havent read 10 and 18 yet though, very excited for 18 since i love reading anything native american related stuff.

OKAY NOW FOR THE GRAND PRIZE!!! the book that i mentioned last blog post.

The Watsons Go to Birmingham --- 1963. How did it go, Mr. Frantic?

Good lord, this book was funny, moving, and shocking.

I can't even describe how i feel; i feel so stumped on emotions. But I loved this book, it felt like a breath fresh of air after all that drag with Jewel by Bret Lott. It made me laugh over silly dialogue, it made me stop and think, it made me nervous towards the end because that last line in the description of this book, "They're going to Birmingham, Alabama, toward one of the darkest moments in American history" kept repeating in my head for the last two chapters of this book. I kept thinking, "is Kenny going to die?" Maybe his older brother or younger sister would get killed, hell, a lot of worse things were popping up in my head. That whirlpool incident where kenny nearly drowned and byron had to pull him out got me TENSE, but it was one of my favorite chapters ever. i genuinely thought kenny was gonna die right there and then, but nah lil bro made it out alive like the champ that he is. but man, the bombing after that chapter had me so stunned. i really thought joetta died there, and the way the destruction of the church was described made me so sad. i lowkey was gonna cry honestly. and kenny thinking joetta was some ghost coming to visit him,, awww dude cmon. so sad what the heck i thought this was supposed to be a silly book and that i was just tricked into thinking nothing bad would ever happen.

I do like the fact that joetta and kenny have their own little parallels of angels to each other, its a nice touch! kenny imagining joetta as an angel as he drowns, and joetta apparently seeing kenny before the bomb of the church.

so far, byron has to be my favorite character. he is really interesting and sometimes i hated him, sometimes i liked him, sometimes i felt bad for him, especially when he killed that gray dove by accident with a cookie and he genuinely felt bad. i know we got a loottttt of moments with this asshole older brother, but i do wish we had more of his kinder side. he can be so caring and loving, that really sealed the deal for me as favorite character when he shows those traits. i swear someone could do a whole character analysis on this guy and id read it!!

i give this book nine wool poohs out of ten wool poohs. this the kind of book you read in your english class and write an essay on it LOL.

oh yeah, i hear there's a film based off this book? im kind of tired rn to look into it but hey if i see it and watch it ill talk about it in the next blog post. anyway, sorry for the short crappy review. my brain is fried rn since its so late in the night beleeegghh. i hope you enjoy my review, as messy it is.
