Hihihi!! Nobody is answering my texts so im gonna yap herereeee… anyway I think mouthwashing is a really beautiful game and I have been obsessed with it for the past couple of weeks or so, but nobody has been listening to me like you need to dive deep into all of its story and its details to fully get understanding of what it means because there is the stuff on the surface level that is understandable or if you’re like oh yeah that’s kind of deep, but I feel like it’s a game that you have to actually read over and look at again just to fully comprehend.
Anya
So Anya is my favorite character, and I know she’s a lot of people’s too, but the way her character developed in the game was very interesting to me and the different points of view are reflective of our current world when you’re looking at Jimmy’s point of view you can see that Anya is Very timid and quiet and she just seems overall shy and not that of her actual personality. When you look at Anya from Curly’s point of view, you can see she’s very competitive and witty, and I guess you could say a bit flirty. I don’t ship Curly and Anya, but you can kind of see from their conversation in the medical room they flirt a bit. Some people would debate that it’s flirting, but I feel the undertones would say so. Also, when you’re talking to Anya. Talking about the dead pixel curly says that he doesn’t see the pixel and that he goes crazy looking for it I’ll go deeper into this later when talking about Curly’s character, but it just shows how he and other people aren’t fully looking into stuff like Anya‘s assault and that stuff happens in real life because I think “oh that person would never do that. They’re my friend”, but you don’t know if they did or not you can’t prove it. Anya can also be possibly described as a funny person because a detail you see is that she and Daisuke have an inside joke about Yimpy, and it also shows the humanization of these characters to make you connect with them more.
Curly
So I think Curly is a very interesting character because he is very morally gray. In which we don’t see tons of his character, I mean kind of when we switch to his point of view throughout the game, but we never really get to talk to him that much from an outside perspective so back to what I said in Anya‘s part about curly not seeing the full picture so he says that he’d go crazy looking for it in which I feel that a reflection of him, trying to see Jimmy as a bad person, but he can’t in which makes him dismiss Anya because he and Jimmy were friends and that’s honestly a horrible thing to do but the thing is that can be understandable because Jimmy was the Copilot And so he’s helpful and he probably knows that Jimmy would possibly or something like that as we can see Jimmy spiral throughout the game and do all the stuff in the event events of mouthwashing. Also, I don’t think it’s personally wrong to call Curly a bad person, but I do think that people should look at the situation they were in he was also kind of trapped almost but that doesn’t excuse the fact that he dismissed Anya when curly is all burnt up and laying on he has laughed at some point like when Jimmy finds a gun and I think that’s because Anya was trying to hide it from him the whole time like when he finds Anya earlier in the story, she was trying to hide it from Jimmy in which she was scared that he would try to do something, and that is one of the theories on what made curly laugh at that point also part of it could have been being in pain for so long starting to cause him to be delusional or there’s so many factors it’s kind of hard to pinpoint, but it could be all of them or none of them but I think it is because she tried hiding it from him, but I also think it’s that Jimmy is one of the last ones there even though he’s the one that caused all of it to happen.
Swansea
So I think Swansea is very he was kind of like the father figure that lots of characters have taken on in media like games, movies TV shows, etc. but he also has issues in which we can see that Swansea had an issue with drinking as he said that he had an issue beforehand in the game. I don’t know which chapter this was in someone can double check me on that but like other characters, he’s this older grumpy dude that a younger person latches onto. I’m pretty sure (correct me if I’m wrong), he had two children and that could be a reflection on him allowing Daisuke to latch onto him because he is a father. Also, I see Swansea as a selfless person. He tried saving the cryo-pod for Daisuke and discussed it with Anya and possibly Curly before the crash, but I am not fully sure of that. Though once Daisuke dies, you can see Swansea just crumble. Daisuke was the only reason for him to keep going at this point and now that Daisuke was dead, there was nothing left. With Anya being dead too, he’s fully angry at Jimmy. He most likely knows what Jimmy did at this point and he tried to kill him as we see, but ends up dying himself. When he’s about to die, he tells us about his character and you can see into him and how he is as a person and his thoughts on Jimmy, in which is obviously that he does not like him and he believed that there’s no future for them when Jimmy says they can still make stuff right. Swansea does not believe it at all. I also think he does not want to believe it or even if he does, he doesn’t want to try at this point because everything that went down this could be a huge and misinterpreted that I just said, but I don’t know.
Daisuke
So for many people, Daisuke is a black-and-white character you can just see he can be bubbly, happy funny clumsy, but the thing is he is more than that. He is still young so he’s going to be having a lot of emotions and things going on and it is seen that many characters and even people who are funny and such have a deep backstory humor can be used as a coping mechanism or a front and so dice gate could be just that black-and-white character that many people see him as but you can see… He’s not. He tries very hard throughout the game but I think he doesn’t believe in himself and he thinks that other people don’t either but I think that’s completely wrong, as people may disagree since his mom said that he’s lazy and needed to get a job but I think that could be her saying he has potential and the way Swansea is helping him throughout his internship that could be a showing of his character and looking at it through Jimmy’s viewpoint, Daisuke could be seen as almost annoying, but I think that’s another thing on the perspective of this game. It’s very twisted that Jimmy is going to be an unreliable narrator, and I will talk about that in the next part which will be Jimmy’s, but Daisuke is just seen as an attractive, funny, almost a joke-like character, but he’s not and he has a deep personality and it’s just dumbed down due to his uplifted personality, even though that is not equal to his smarts or anything about him and you don’t get to take a deep look into him, I think that might tie back into the funny characters having humor as a coping mechanism. He could be letting his feelings bubble all up and just not letting anyone know about his feelings and just kind of using anything as humor to get through it all. Being in this time of need and being young, he still has a lot of motivation. You could say maybe that’s not the right word but he has a spark and that is very important in this time because it’s really hard in which they’re stranded in space.
Jimmy
So I think out of all of the characters Jimmy is the one that was just so impactful in the worst way it made him a good character and I’m not saying that he’s a good person because he’s definitely not, but he represents a lot of things and shows things that happen in real life that people are not willing to talk about. Jimmy was most definitely mentally ill in someway in which he crashed the ship and slowly started to spiral and maybe there wasn’t anything wrong with him before, but something had to have triggered because he gets more and more violent progressively. He gets more frustrated throughout the game and you can see what could be described as his inner thoughts, but it could also be seen to be shared with Curly in the take responsibility because, Curly is the captain of the ship but then Jimmy takes over and he feels like he has to take responsibility for everything. It causes him to get more frustrated and such but when stuff happens, he just deals with it because he feels the need to do it like when Anya asked him to give curly his medicine. He gets so angry and it’s almost close to a rage at this point, but he feels like he needs to take responsibility for what he’s done and he tries to fulfill and it ends up making everything worse. This may be part of what finally let up to killing everyone because yes, while a lot of the problems were, Jimmy’s fault; I feel like there’s other factors that tie into everything. Also, I think the dead pixel that Anya mentions can also be representative of Jimmy because as stated twice before, I said that that curly does not see the dead pixel and just sees the bigger picture and that shows curly not wanting to see Jimmy as a bad person because, perspective is very important in this game. In which Anya can be seen as things like timid, confident, playful or kind and curly can be seen as a leader, responsible, confident, but also weak at the same time, (Depending on whose viewpoint you’re looking at it from). What’s very important to look at in this game that is disturbing but necessary is when Jimmy had Daisuke crawl into the vent, and it just shows how far he’s willing to go to make sure that he can keep control. It seems like he needs to be in control like when Curly tries to leave that’s a change and he doesn’t like it and he’s no longer in control and that could also be part of the reason why he crashed the ship in the first place; he feels out of control. The same thing happens when Swansea is trying to kill him, and it may seem a little confusing on that stance, but everything has gone way in the wrong direction at this point and he’s spiraled a lot by now. When we’re looking at the final scenes and which curly is placed in the cryo- pod, Jimmy shoots himself and that’s him no longer being able to get all of those frustrations and stuff have built up to the point where he has hurt himself and many others. This reflects onto the outside world, this game can be interpreted in many ways. Jimmy is a character that the others are afraid of, and that could be due to his lashing out and his anger like earlier in the game. He seems chill, but they start to see him spiral and become more violent and maybe that is something they were aware of before the crash happened because the game skips around it doesn’t give us day-by-day and months. As stuff happens before the crash, it gives us these events to piece everything together, and that gap is also a good thing to put into the story because it brings a mystery element. You could say that Jimmy could have gotten aggressive during these times and as we know, Jimmy assaulted Anya and it wasn’t said that outright, but it is very heavily implied and if said otherwise. This also was not shown when it happened (though it would be sometime pre-crash). It’s very clear on what he did to Anya and it’s so disturbing it gets to people and that’s what makes them such a good character because you can see how terrible he is, but you’re playing as him and it gives you an almost stuck feeling like you don’t wanna keep going. Though, there’s a compelling feeling that just keeps you to keep going and finish it off and that could be to get the player to connect with Jimmy as he felt like he needed to take responsibility and keep Going.
(Sorry if it’s a bit weird, I used text to speech. I tried to correct as much as possible!!)
