In January 1969, the Beatles spent the whole month in two studios on the "Get Back" project which would later become the 1970 album Let It Be.
On January 10th, after quite an excruciating session with multiple takes of "Get Back" and "Two of Us" (excluding Paul's piano moments before these), George Harrison would leave the band unexpectedly. Now his motivations can be traced to quite a few things, like an argument on January 6th regarding Paul's control over George's playing, the band's disinterest for songs that would later go on his All Things Must Pass album 6 months after Let It Be's release (I Me Mine was the only song by Harrison to be played by the full band in the GB sessions and it was for only one day!), and his overall disconnect with the band. But one thing is for sure, George was miserable.
That's not to say he was like that all the time during the sessions, he seemed to lighten up by the move to Apple Studios on January 20th. But in those earlier sessions, you can just see the man so done with it all. His pitch for "I Me Mine" on January 8th was even passive-aggressive with him saying "I don't care if you don't want it" before he demoed it for the band.
So what am I getting at? Where's the funny part?
Well what I find funny is how they portrayed George on the cover of Let It Be.
Like out of the 3 others, who all have some varied expressions that I can only describe as somber, George just has this big smile. The most joyous, even on the back cover he's the only one with a positive expression.
Like the one Beatle who's gone through the most while recording this album is on the covers with these pearly whites out and about like nothing ever happened on January 10th. That's what I found funny.
Or maybe it's actually a metaphor for George finally becoming independent of the Beatles by the time the album released... and he's only happy because he finally found himself in a good position while John screamed with Yoko, while Paul fucked off somewhere, and while Ringo sulked... maybe it was all meant to mean something...
put yer thinking caps on for this one
But we CAN'T have nice things in life, so when Paul and 2 engineers made Let It Be... Naked in 2003, they said "let there be no more happy george"
the lesson here?
