A while ago I had a fairly lengthy argument with someone who claimed that the quest VR headsets (e.g. the quest 2/3/3s) are a "scam" due to their under-powered hardware and their different market for games that meet these hardware limitations. They claimed that:
- You can "buy a PCVR-ready PC for the same price as buying a quest 2" (to note: at the time, I owned a quest 2 and had not upgraded yet; I don't think the quest 3 came out yet either iirc)
- And that "paying 300$ was an outright scam due to receiving a headset with 'bad' hardware."
My counterpoints in this argument are as follows:
- PCVR-ready PCs are notoriously known to be expensive, as well as the VR headset itself depending on what you want your setup to be; Buying a Quest series headset is a cost-effective way to solving the VR headset part of your setup as they're relatively cheap
- If you can't afford buying/making a PCVR-ready PC, then buying a Quest series is practically an amazing offer. Your only con is basically having hardware limitations.
- The definition of a "scam" compared to "marketing" is "a dishonest scheme; a fraud" to "the activity or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising." which as you can see are completely different things. Giving the quest series a bit of flare isn't going to harm the public, and you see it all the time in advertising, so why do you complain about it being a "scam"
You can probably think of other cons/pros in supporting/going against this argument so please leave it in the comments below.
