modern poetry - 12•27•24

i am someone who is deeply enamored by art. i love all forms of it, whether it’s music or paint i find myself drawn to it. the thing is, i feel like in this modern age people settle for mediocrity and claim its genius. of course, this could be my own pretentious ego talking, but i mainly find this problem within not just drawing but the form that drew my attention to this was poetry.

many people nowadays are getting paid to say some of the most mediocre things that anyone with a brain could write down. yes, i know there is different formulas and ways people do things, and yes i know taste is subjective, but take certain things such as “he didn’t like drama/ and i was fucking Shakespeare” for example. of course that’s humorous and dare i say clever, but there’s no passion behind it. it feels empty and hollow when there is so many other underrated artists who put their heart and soul into the poems they write to tell important messages that many other poets or artists just can’t manage to do but they still get praise for it as if they are some form of geniuses. i don’t know, i just get mad pretty easily. ofc people are allowed to like what they like but if anyone tries to tell me they cried to some of those TikTok poets i’d actually burst out laughing.

and don’t get me started on the controversy of AI and how there is not an ounce of passion within some random 40 year old dad bod 4th divorce beer guzzling homophobic “anti-woke” white man writing down what he wants a machine to mediocrely craft for him so he can sell it off and claim that he himself made it to make sure that people who actually spend hours on their art to make sure they not only stay true to themselves but also to pay their bills can’t get the recognition they deserve.
