No Glory

you gave the position of commander

to another general

who never saw a day of battle.

but she knew her weapons, played your gambit

had two shoulders, elbows, knees and eyes.

by the time you knew, i was already torn apart

cowering like an animal

not fit to serve

but to retire and waste

as a hero for no cause at all.

in duly representing

your country and your glory

the day i returned home

i waged another in my head just for a placing

i would never sit at

and for a metal

i let drop to my feet.

i do not 'shed tears if i must,' anymore

instead i look to the moon

and ache

for that flag i stuck in the earth

to have meant victory.
