Moth goes to brazil and japan and africa (i talk about geordie greep

I reviewed the new sound by Geordie Greep yesterday and it was the best thing I've ever written. One thing that perplexed me was this idea of a new sound. Why is it called The New Sound? That's what we're going to unpack! Well there isn't really much to unpack, the question I posed is a tiny moonbag that resides next to a large suitcase. So what is there to unpack? Can i stop saying unpack? Well maybe there's a toothbrush in there, some uhh whatever you put in a moon bag! Idk I've never had one so i don't know what it can hold.

That's enough filler for the first paragraph. The New sound is jazz! Brazilian music and African music and Japanese fusion jazz. Geordie Greep actually pointed to an album titled My Song by Keith Jarrett. It's a cool album and actually I haven't heard it in a while. I'm gonna give it a listen while I write this. Damn, I love jazz. I'm surprised the new sound was lost on me at first because jazz is probably my favorite genre besides hip hop. This song is so smooth, so personal, it says so much through only instrumentals.

I can relate more to instrumental albums if I'm being honest. By relate I mean I can project my self onto the songs and there's no pesky lyrics to tell me otherwise. I remember listening to a death grips song and I was like wow this song impacts me because Bob lob law dededede da and someone was like "errrm no" but for a song from... let's say... dreamcast summer songs which hardly has vocals, i can say whatever I want about it and there's a way of reading it that makes it seem factual.

The funny thing is i projected myself onto most of the new sound barring most of the sexual lyrics, I'm too much of a goody-two-shoes for that but the one song I didn't was the title track. It's like this Brazilian inspired song. In the context of the album its a moment of bliss. Yk before knowledge and logic kicks in and you start overthinking? But I think it's also a little taste of greep wanted to make. He wanted to make an instrumental jazz fusion, Brazilian inspired album but who would listen to that.... Me. me me ME me MEEE MEEE.

The fucker baits the black midi fans too. I wrote this in my review of the album not that he baits us but that Holy, Holy and Blues show us how the main character on the album wants to be perceived and you develop a certain perception of the album then the whole thing dropped and it's like "Oh, what's all this other bullshit?" I'm kidding they both appeal to different parts of me. Do you know how I've wanted a greep jazz album. Like I heard The instrumentals on sugar/tzu by black midi and it's like damn dude. So good.

Anyway, I feel like Greep feels he has to appeal to the audience in some way. Like listen, this song sounds like Black Midi!!!! This one does too!! I'm talking about Holy, Holy and Blues and not to mention one of the songs on the album was already known way before because it was performed live by them. I had a thought that just obliterated my self esteem. Imagine I'm on a date, we're in a coffee shop and I'm telling this person "yeah so akshually Geordie Greep wanted appeal to black midi fans because he added a song they've performed live..." dawg.v

But yeah the song is called Walk Up. Good song. The New Sound is like I've said a representation of what he wanted to make. He seems himself as a sort of jazz musician and in a way I do too! He has that attitude. In walk up the end involves these guys cheering and shouting and this dude goes I ain't got no home and does a song on the banjo and some songs just end so weirdly like one song ends with this dude saying "got a niece?" And it's because there's a collaborative spirit.

This is a solo album but it's not exactly solo, there's other people. And Seth Evans does a vocal performance. It's so good. Best song on the album @ me right now. I've heard this album 33 times in two weeks, I can refute whatever you have to say. Motorbike is the best song and it's an amazing three track run. I just adore Greep's attitude towards music like it's painfully ironic, on an album about a self absorbed man that greep shares the spotlight with so many others. And to go back to walk up with the people screaming, there's an element of like lost control.

Yk these people finish up and they're just celebrating and greep is yelling "turn that shit down motherfucker" and they don't listen and that's awesome! It reminds me of the Mingus quote where he says "I just write music, I don't tell em how to play" greep is just telling a story and he doesn't tell the performers how to underscore it. I love greep. He wants to share the stage with his collaborators and I love that.

Anyway! Here's your homework. Listen to....

  • The New Sound by Geordie Greep
  • Schlagenheim + Cavalcade + (most importantly) hellfire by Black Midi
  • My Song by Keith Jarrett
  • Black Saint and the Sinner lady by Charles Mingus
  • Clube de esquina + (this one is a personal recommendation from a Brazilian musician) Milagre Dos Peixes by Milton Nascimento
  • Saudades by Naná Vasconcelos
  • Pacific by Harumi hosono
  • BRASILIAN SKIES by Mayoshi Takanaka

That's your homework. Go listen.

I barely skimmed this but I just had to leave a comment, I also really like the album as someone who's not jazz heavy (more on mainstream japanese-style jazz in "niche" communities lol) but, IM GLAD YOU UNPACKED THIS I effing love knowing someone also appreciates the new sound and I'm rather excited for what geordie greep comes out with next!
