I feel like, considering the kind of people that use this site are most likely nostalgic for the old-internet, there's a decent chance some of you were on Gaia Online back in the day. If you never were, you really missed out, man.
It was sort of like this dress-up socializing anime game? There were 'towns' where just about everyone would hang out at. People would just sit down under trees, or by the houses, or whatever, and just chat! It was cozy and fun. The music that played at these towns was a nice little tune. I usually ended up muting it to listen to my own music. (Mostly bleach anime openings back then, I had just discovered anime and was obsessed.) Though, nowadays, looking back on it? It gives me such a comfy feeling. Plus every version of it that I can find online has that crispy, nostalgic...like.. 'muffled compression' sound to it. Here's an example of what I mean.
Besides the towns, there was also like, the place you could go to race cars? I forget its name but it was basically some kind of parking lot, people would go there, hang out, show off their cars, and race each other. It was fun! I went there a lot. I was even kinda decent at it. Because of that though, young dumb teenage me thought I was such a badass. I'd be all "Yeah, I'm undefeatable, I'm the best racer here, go ahead, challenge me." I must've been insufferable lmao.
Customizing your "Gaian" was fun too! Though for a broke lil kid like me it was limited. I made due with what I could, but I would always be so jealous of all the amazingly cool stuff everyone else had. But obviously the entire game was mostly about your lil character so all the cool stuff cost real money, which, as a dopey 13 year old, wasn't easy to come across without begging from my mother. And she was none too pleased about the idea, obviously. OH-! I just remembered there was also "Zomg!" it was like...an mmo inside the game. I never got far but it was...weird. Your starting skill/weapon was always this fucking actual ass gun. And you'd be fighting slimes, but, they were made out of urine. ...Very odd. Very "of its time."
I had like, a 'girlfriend' on there. We would flirt and stuff all the time, never really lasted though. (obviously) but Gaia Online was basically my younger self's life. If you were ever on there, I'd love to hear about your time on it. If you can, show me your avatar even!
Otherwise, thanks for reading. Hope your day is goin' well ♥
I still visit my Gaia Online account every now and then today. I tried getting back into it several times, but I think ever since Flash Player died and took away Towns, Towns 2 and Rally with it, I found it increasingly hard to stay committed because using forums to talk to people just... Doesn't hit the same.
The devs seem to be trying to bring it back- now instead of Towns and other similar games/maps, we have Avatar Chat which is in its beta phase I think... There was a far more ambitious attempt at reviving Towns with a sort of 3D space if I remember well, but, Gaia just isn't what it used to be honestly. I miss it. I've always been a huge sucker for online virtual worlds and talking to strangers online. Sure, we have lots of different apps and websites nowadays to talk online but it's not the same when you can't have an avatar and a whole lot of other stuff! We had guilds and we could "buy" and decorate our own houses and stuff. It was so cool.
Gaia even had like... An aquarium game! And you could buy and get fish and decor for your tank and showcase your tank in your forum post signatures and stuff! Such a great website...
I fully agree. I never tried the fishing/aquarium side of things, maybe I should've.
It makes me so sad towns are gone, the death of flash was the death of the old internet in many ways, I feel. Thankfully places like neo-cities and this site still keep it alive though! I *also* logged onto Gaia semi-recently, didn't do much though, since the whole point, for me, was the towns and Rally.
I don't even have access to my original count unfortunately :c but maybe that's for the best...my username back then was "ScreamingGothicChaos" LMAO
