here's a thought: you probably wouldn't be friends with a movie character. everyone likes to think they'd be on the right side, supporting the main character unlike everyone who looks down on them. that's because you know this character will triumph in the end. you get to foresee how wrong their rivals are. but real life has no narrative.
there is no real equivalent. to be on the side of those ostracized means to lose your own credibility, there is no guarantee you'll ever be vindicated. you must support someone because you love them, not because they will bring upon the happy ending or save you.
i think most people are the ugly step sisters. the unicorn hunters. the evil henchmen. the zombie crowd. you wouldn't have helped cinderella.
