A Gyaru's Guide - The Basics of Gyaru (31/10/2024)

So, you wanna be a gyaru/gyaruo, but you have no clue where to start... I mean, they just look so cool! Look at those belts, those nails, that big hair, that makeup - where do you even begin?

Well, that's where this blog comes in handy! Let me be your guide for all things gyaru.

First, we gotta remember this - gyaru is not something you can easily buy. I mean, look at reseller prices! It's insane work I tell you. That's, my friends, where D.I.Y saves us! It has definitely saved me a few times, that's for sure...

And now, here's the real meat of it all - this is what I refer to as the 'Pillars of Gyaru'. Well, at least when it comes to appearance.

Pillar One: Makeup

This is the utmost important one, so never underestimate the power of good eyeliner game. Veteran gyarus even say this is important - without makeup, how can anyone tell you're a gal/gyaruo? And yes, even you men have to comply. So, suck up your insecure masculinity, and start applying your foundation! Here's some helpful tips just for you guys.

Tip 1: You can choose from tan foundation to light foundation. However, most substyles (if you choose to dedicate yourself to one) tend to go with tanner shades of foundation. Just remember to not go too dark. Always set with setting spray or pressed powder for a matte and preserved look throughout the day!

Tip 2: Don't forget those circle lenses! Although you shouldn't always wear them, it always helps to tie your look together. There are a few pretty good websites - but always make sure to verify any recommendations!

Tip 3: The eye-conic droop - get it? Bad puns aside, there are good guides to really get into this and do this correctly. My tips on this are to create a thick liner across the lashline where your upper lid is visible, and to drag the end down. From there, create a droop from the centre of your bottom lashline. I'll create an in depth guide about makeup soon, don't worry!

Pillar Two: Hair

This is also pretty important, but keep in mind in recent years, darker hair colours are more accepted. Back then, if you didn't bleach your hair, you'd be considered a poser! Good thing gyaru's been more open, but there are still very big rules to upkeep.

Tip 1: You gotta style your hair! Find some inspo for you - Pinterest is the best app for inspo-boards.

Tip 2: Sujimori... unless you had prior experience, I'd suggest staying away from super complicated sujimori. You could easily burn yourself or damage your hair - I always suggest starting out with experimenting with layers and even colours, if you're feeling adventurous. But always be careful with bleach! But, if you're a gyaru who's used to handling the heat, there are hundreds of sujimori hairstyles to try. I can even make a guide on all things sujimori!

Tip 3: Take care of that hair! Let me also call myself out here - those dead ends are screaming to be cut off. So, wash your hair, put on a nourishing hair mask that keeps any colour you have, and make sure to dry it on a heat that won't burn your hair follicles off of your scalp.

Pillar Three: Clothes

A massive misconception is that as a gyaru, you have to ALWAYS dress to the nines everyday. This is simply just not true - although the guys and gals you have on your interest for outfit inspo wear massive belts and brands galore, more than half of the time they're either models or just long time wearers of gyaru. I mean, gyaru is basically a lifestyle. If they're collecting over the years, it's gonna be massive. But anyways, here are some tips for you.

Tip 1: As long as you have the makeup, you can wear quite a lot of things. Not everything, obviously, but you can always just go casual with bright colours and some good ol' manba makeup.

Tip 2: Thrift, thrift, thrift! You can't rely on fast fashion forever - stuff like it may well just end up in a landfill. And no, the clothes are not going to look like your Depop shopping basket. That's where layering comes in!

Tip 3: D.I.Y. I f you can't find it, make it. I mean, you get cute clothes AND new skills and hobbies. You can find cheap scraps of fabric, thrift jewellery for embellishments - the possibilities are always and forever will be endless!

Well hey, you made it to the bottom! Wanna add more tips for gyarus/gyaruos out there? Any requests? Or do you just wanna show your appreciation for this blog? Comment on this blog and give kudos! It's real fun writing these, and I hope these will one day reach people from across the world. Remember, get wild and be sexy!
