Magical Destroyers: Sailor moon on shrooms

Ok I just finished watching magical destroyers and I j wanted to share my thoughts. This post won’t contain any spoilers, ill be giving my personal opinions and will try to help you see if its smth that’s up your alley or not.

The plot is that Japan has outlawed being an otaku, and has created like a military force called the ssc to hunt down and ‘protect’ (imprison) them. Otaku hero is the leader of the rebellion against the SSC, whom he fights w the help of the three magical girls. They show a lot off different kinds of otaku so there's like what you'd expect which is manga/anime fans, but there are people who are enthusiasts for trains, military history etc.

The magical girls also consider themselves otaku, so Blue is a fan of music, she makes references to artists like new order, Marilyn manson and rage against the machine. Pink likes maid cafes and wants to work at one iirc. So I guess they represent certain aspects of otaku culture? I don’t remember Anarchy herself mentioning what in particular she likes, but I think she could represent just like being different and passion for what you like.

I thought that the message was very inspirational because obviously its an exaggeration like people aren’t literally killed and imprisoned for being nerds but its true that a lot of people have to take shit from others j for liking things that they think are weird, I mean if ur not literally bullied you usually at least feel kinda alienated for your interests, especially if youre open about actually passionately liking something and not j casually.

And the whole slogan of the otaku rebellion is that they want a world where you can like what you like as much as you like it, and I think that’s good to keep in mind in a time where cringe culture is like still very much a thing

They also talk about the other side of otaku where its like the people who themselves are otaku but theyre self-hating and theyre just like full of hatred for the things that used to make them happy. Like instead of just liking what they like they j hate on everything instead or like say super venomous stuff to people they just disagree with.

I really loved the character designs, I mean anarchy obviously is like a metal version of sailor moon, really cool. I made gijinkas of the angry birds, and she looks a lot like my version of red

Pinks design is my favorite, she reminds me of mighty nyander’s sister? That very like old school kids anime type of costume with the gas mask makes a cool contrast. I like how goofy otaku hero’s design looks but he's like the leader of the rebellion and stuff lol.

I also liked the SSC character designs, they're like these armoured suits with this funny round head on top that has a :3 drawn on.

The transformation sequences were awesome, totally psychedelic. I mean blue's is like she takes her scythe out of her brain, gets trapped in an iron maiden and then pops out in her magical girl outfit. Its like sailor moon on drugs. I've already started working on fanart for these guys, that’s how much I like these character designs.

Next ill talk about the fight scenes, now I really enjoyed these they were like on a huge scale, completely insane like from the first episode itself the fights were total insanity. Like kinda reminds me of mp100 almost? Like one of pinks attacks was to make it rain body pillows, anarchy flicked a booger that turned into a meteor type thing. I cant even explain it well enough, you j have to see it.

And I'm not even the type of person to heavily focus on fight scenes because I usually find them too much like kids’ roleplay chatrooms, but these actually had me thinking damn whats going to happen next. I guess I like fight scenes that are unpredictable more than ones that are like ‘I use my super blast// well I counter with my buper blast!!’

There is a very insane plot twist at the end, im not going to give spoilers but I definitely did not see this coming. I mean it wasn’t even hinted at throughout the show, nothing I could catch anyway. It reminded me of anime gataris but I kinda liked this even more, it was even crazier.

The humour is pretty decent I  mean I did laugh a bit.

My fav funny bit is when this guy in an itasha sacrifices himself by ramming his car into one of the villains. And they're like noo cringemobile guy!!!

the chariot of a warrior

the face of a war hero. SALUTE!

One of the more comedy-focused episodes is when they meet old gen anime fans. Their kids show up and theyre like ‘dad can you come home, moms getting annoyed’. Then theres like a swim meet that has quite a few gags and stuff, like pink doping and hulking out.

The art style well its fine, nothing that really stands out to me like that, I liked the designs but the style itself did not stand out to me. I remember that it doesn’t use too many highlights, and uses mostly j shadow to communicate the lighting. In a way I preferred not too many highlights over that boring band of white with a low opacity that they j slap on the hair in some anime (that’s sooo lazy).

I thought the side profiles of the characters look a bit weird at times. Like theyd been slapped too hard and their mouth had migrated to the side of their head or something, lol. I guessed they put more budget and time into the big fight scenes so sometimes the characters can look a bit wonky.

Give this anime a shot if you like fight scenes on really huge scales, psychedelic visuals and id say its pretty funny as well. Im not usually a fan of anime that takes itself too seriously or anything too sad (because they usually fail to connect with me when they do) so this did work for me. However, the ending is a bit inconclusive so you may not feel entirely satisfied with it. If you view it in a metaphorical way then yeah it might make more sense, but yeah just letting you know.

Magical destroyers makes me proud to be cringe and free
