physical media

i've been wanting to consume more physical media rather than internet content lately. i have a crippling phone addiction that's ruling my life and dulling my relationships, and i'm desperately trying to find something that'll make me feel even the slightest bit of serotonin. i have depression, happy chemicals are hard to come by around here.

i have a small collection of physical media, and i'd like to grow it, but that can be kind of hard without a steady stream of income. though maybe... that's the point? maybe it's a good thing to only consume a small amount of media. i suppose it would make life a little less overstimulating, like how spacehey is compared to garbage like twitter. (not calling it x, sorry not sorry elon musk)

so, this christmas, i'm asking my family for a portable cd player and a few cds: animal crossing soundtrack 2009, the electric dreams movie soundtrack, and bluey: the album. i also asked for a jellycat smudge bear, but that's not relevant.

i gotta lock in again and fix my dependence on social media. it's ruining my adhd brain and distracting me from interacting with the people i love. i gotta lock in, play my video games, watch my movies, and sometimes just sit in silence. the bad thoughts can't hurt me, and i need to be able to confront them instead of trying to drown them out with pointless youtube videos.

anyway, that's my rant about physical media and phone addiction. i'm getting up and trying again.

i love you all. <3

if you try to cut out your phone obsession by replacing it with different kinds of media or forms of communication, you're going to have the same problem in a different coat of paint.

try to find irl forms of entertainment. take classes in something you're interested in, or try to shop in-person more instead of online. get a library card, pick up a new instrument, try to learn to sew.

when i cut my phone use down to nothing, i just found myself using my laptop more. when i deleted spotify/soundcloud, i just found myself buying more and more cds. when i deleted all the apps i used to text people, i was just texting people with my actual phone number more. it wasnt until i started finding "unplugged entertainment" that i actually started using social media less. and i dont call it serotonin - humans arent meant to be happy all the time. sometimes i go to a bar and im scared walking back to my car. does it ruin my night? no, to have a rainbow u gotta have a little rain

i would recommend the following:
- getting rid of any and all social media
- only use email to contact frens
- force yourself to use physical media, burning media onto CDs or DVDs is fine ofc
- try to only consoom the media once or twice, at least within a shorter amount of time

SpaceHey is far less addictive than something like TikTok or even Twitter, and is also a good option if frens can't use email to contact you. Otherwise, it is mostly easy. I would also argue that you should try to *only* use the internet on a computer, preferably an older computer running Linux Mint or Arch Linux (would recommend Gentoo if it weren't hell to setup on the first attempt). You can setup things so you can just login, logout, be done. I presume you'd have a spare laptop available for this, but if not, even early-2000s laptops would be pretty easy to get it working on if done carefully, and it's all you really need for anything which doesn't involve resource-heavy things. Going back onto social-media will ruin progress though, so I would advise to quit outright if possible, and if not, make it so annoying to use that you rarely use it.
