[THIS IS A VERY LONG BLOG so please consider before reading all this.]
Warning: This is my work experience as an employee in children education field. This may not similar to other people's work experience, but I sincerely hope that this may help with people who worry about having careers (especially teenagers who are nervous), and maybe motivate people even if it's just little help. However, I also want to know people's experiences too, so if you want, you can leave your comment and we'll learn it all together! Thank you.
I've been working in the art academy in the mall for quite sometimes now. I work in the 7th of the mall which is children education zone of the mall, so I've seen other caretakers from different academies around the mall, mostly taking children to use the restroom since where I work is right next to the mall restroom. Sometimes I even get to talk with other caretakers too! I also made friend with an old lady who works in the academy next to mine! She told me about her two grandchildren too. The oldest keeps working part-times and moving job to job, and the other is graduating next year... hehe... feel so young. However, we enjoy our conversations every time.
I also met some people I've never thought I would get to see so often which are janitors around the area and the mall security. I got a thumb up from him sometimes, mostly when I was on my shift for 6 hours and still standing. At least a little support helps a lot, you can trust me on that, I really need it.
My job position isn't anything special, I'm not even a teacher. I'm just a salesman selling courses to people, but I like to make myself useful by getting kids their apron for painting, cleaning the table, tidying up the workplace, and I even get to play with children! (Welp... it said in the requirement that you needed to "love kids".)
At the first day, children were not drawn to me yet since they're not used to around me yet, but the more I work, the more I know how to be around them. When I was leaving from the employee room, a little girl saw me and asked "Are you a new teacher, miss?", it caught me off guard but I was very happy that I finally got along with children since the first day was quite tough. (I'm not really a teacher, but I can draw a little. I can teach a little bit but may not be so professional.)
The more children get comfortable, the more they become unbearable to handle sometimes. Some kids are so rude that they don't even care who I am, and I'm telling you, teachers themselves DON'T wanna yell or be too harsh at kids. It requires a lot of patience to be so calm, but it's worth it. Sometimes while I was working, there're children coming too. It was quite annoying since I had to be alert all the time, but I don't blame them, I also played with them. I even went back inside just to have them showing their drawings to me with their pride. It always make my shifts better every time.
Something that is worse than children is parents. They are the REAL customers, the one that is a lot harder to take care off. I sometimes struggle too since I have to explain everything repeatedly to every parents that walk by. Some customers see me and don't take me seriously and ask to talk to the adult, which is my boss who sits at the counter, some customers are so serious on money that they don't even try to hide it and just keep asking about money, but there're good parents too. What they all do is asking questions about what will their children be doing of they buy the course for their children, at least none of them take my words too lightly, it's a good thing.
I don't know how they could tell that I'm still young, but they knew. They wouldn't go so bluntly and ask what grade I was but instead would always ask the same question which was "Are you planning to study this field?" then they would start asking what year was I in college. I couldn't really lie much since I know they would take my words very seriously due to my job position, so I had to tell them honestly that I was still in high school. They immediately went a lot easier on me, there's one of the kid's parents even bought me snacks too (mostly because I have to stand up and help customers all day long.) When they know I'm a high school student, that's when they start having long conversations with me. It bothers me at work sometimes, but in a job with task to just stand up all day and doing absolutely nothing else in particular, this is a good way to kill times. To be honest, they can sometimes be very kind, to me at least. (They ask me too of I'm underpaid, that's how I know they care. lol)
My workplace isn't so strict, especially my boss. She's a 25 years old manager of this academy who would be blasting songs and would play Boombayah by BlackPink then start dancing during the shift while children are watching. (She actually did). It was fun however. If my boss is happy, it means that I'm going to have a good shift after all. One of the teachers is a part time teacher who is still in college, and we got along. He would be walking in that place like a model and he would "slay" in the entire shift.
From my experience, I must say that working experiences make you go outside more and see new things you may not get to see everyday. You may see same people who come daily or weekly but sometimes you may meet new people too! But I must confess that my shifts are sometimes boring and make me just want to go home, but still I will be counting days to go back to work again. I'll be waiting until time to cloak off work to buy an iced mocha for refreshment after work and see my dad waiting for me to pick me up after work at the 3th floor. (I'm waiting to get my driver license so I can go home by myself.) But this job requires a lot a patience. It's not a fun work to do, but better than nothing.
I love the job. <3
(I'll be waiting for your stories too.)
(For people who don't know: Jobs in children education field is strictly requires you to be very friendly and patience, especially to "love kids" and have good communication skills, so don't be wondering why do caretakers or people in kindergarten are so friendly but very strict and sometimes they can be little scary off work. That's all, thank you for reading this!)
