As part of my philosophy subject I have been looking at art and the different theories like Intentionalism, which try to give a fool-proof definition of art. However, my class have also gone over the critiques with these theories, so now we have arrived at the stage of developing our own ideas. I thought I'd share the criteria I've made which attempts to define art. I have taken some ideas from other theories and patched them together with my own ideas. If you are reading this, I'd love to hear your opinion too.
- Must be intentionally created and affected.
- Must be created by a human being.
- Cannot be a forgery.
- Must intend to express a thought, feeling, emotion or idea.
- Artist must utilize specific artistic technique/s with medium/s to create a specific look.
Additionally: Good art successfully achieves what it is intended to emulate (realism, surrealism etc. ) when majority of other artists agree that it has done so.
Artist: A person who studies and practices artistic techniques and creates art either as a hobby or as a job.
