Yesterday, Sunday morning, my homie and I arranged a meeting at a local restaurant along with some friends of his that night. I don't really know much about said friends other than the fact that they're a lesbian couple. For some reason he told me to behave properly towards them, not sure why he had to specify.
So, once my homie and I walked inside, the two girls were already seated. We talked a bit, they talked a bit, we laughed a bit, they laughed a bit. All in all, it was going pretty smooth and I made a pretty solid impression to them which made me pretty happy since I'm not experienced on the social department. I just had to drop that one line...
While they were talking about their whole dating experience as a lesbian couple in a conservative country, they seemed pretty frustrated (reasonably, ofc) so I decided to calm them down a little with a joke: "I guess the world really can't handle yuri that good". I laughed, but the gang didn't.
That one simple harmless comment ruined my night. My homie covered the right side of his face with his palm, to express his second hand embarrassment to everyone. The two girls pretended they didn't hear anything; one of them looking up at the ceiling, the other one looking away and happily stating that the music here is so good, as an attempt to change the topic. That moment alone was so embarrassing I refused to open my mouth for the rest of the night. Didn't even tell them goodbye when they left, that's how embarrassed I was.
As of today, the two girls haven't responded to my apology I sent them on Insta. They haven't even seen it and it's been twelve hours. Have I screwed up? I thought lesbians like yuri!

Yuri/anime is designed to be consumed, and all lesbians hear about is how "hot" they are and how much everyone loves to consume lesbian content for pleasure rather than seeing them as people.
Basically calling real gay people yuri/yaoi is objectification and fetishism bc Yuri is normally made for males to consume story/merch and the biggest consumers of yaoi stories and merch are female. (There are more issues with thinking real gay women like yuri, but this is the biggest one)
Try and breathe learn and move on. I would likely not interact with you again myself bc even if you are harmless it's clear some toxicity has been absorbed so it's hard to feel comfy after that. Good luck.

I personally think the joke wasn't that bad- (I've heard worse)but hopefully they didn't take it personally- i feel your pain dude
