Complexity is ok

I think a lot of things we do for convenience end up taking away from the experience. I've lived half of my life consuming media a certain way, and the other half doing it in modern ways. Going out to pick up a movie or CD from a store, vs streaming it all online.

When I look back on this, I'm not really nostalgic, but I do find that back then things meant more to me than they do now. It's like a ritual that's missing important steps to the experience and now we just get the end result. There's no thought or intention behind it, just the consumption.

This goes for the internet as well. Modern social media really takes away from the people, and puts more into the content. That's why i like the way spacehey tries to reintroduce that. Longer form posting, truly customizable profiles, stuff like that. The modern web feels monolithic and disconnected, despite it's promise of staying connected.

I've started doing things the old way again, and the more disconnected I get, the more connected I feel to the part of the world I'm actually living in. The less convenient my media is, the more I appreciate the process of consuming media, and the media itself.

I'm not very old, but I think a lot of other older people feel this way, and I'm seeing younger people feeling this way too. It's refreshing.
