my favorite and recommended horror flims

the visit (2015). some insight to my trauma with this movie, i was 9 when my dad rented this from redbox and played it for us at 10PM in the living room. some more insight, i lived, slept, and was raised by my great grandmother. so the ultimate outcome of this movie was not the best for me. looking back now that i'm older, the twist was extremely predictable and it doesn't have the best scares anymore. however the nostalgia has always kept this movie alive for me, and i always have the same feeling when i watch it. the strange fascination, the terrible way it terrified me, and how much more i actually notice about it everytime i re-watch.

grave encounters (2011). i was going through a found footage phase and this was my first real found footage movie that i was aware was found footage. the pacing is slow as all get out and the overall vibe and theme is extremely predictable. of course, explorers are exploring a haunted asylum. everyone knows where this was going. the twist was mind-blowing. i don't care how many people say, "saw it coming," i did not. and it's rare for me to be that surprised by a movie, it definitely made the experience 10x more fun and scary. i'm not here to critique by any means but the CGI on the scares were poor to horrible, but that's not why i loved it. the entire vibe, theme, twists, ending, setting, all of it combined is why it's one of my top favorite horror movies.

butterfly kisses (2018). the reason this movie is one of my all time favorites is because of the inspiration and feeling i got while watching only the beginning of it. there's nothing i love more than urban legends, horror, and lore. and the tricks with peeping tom with the camera lens, that was fun to watch. i absolutely loved the way everything revealed and fell together.

the ring (2002). i was 6 when i first watched this movie, and it's remained my top favorite movie of all time to this day. i would be in art class, drawing "7 days" and circling a circle in a black crayon violently. from the green color to the actual horror of samara, to the lore of the tape and the nonchalant/cold shoulder attitude that every single character has, it's my favorite thing in the world. i love mysteries and the way the story led you to believe it was about anna only to reveal a deeper and darker truth, it's mesmerizing.

marebito (2004). a friend recommended me this when i asked for "actual scary movies." this movie didn't scare me by any means but it definitely stuck with me. the way the entire thing was surrounded by urban legends, my favorite thing in the entire world. this movie was shot beautifully and the entire setting/vibe was spot on. and the twist was enough for me to think "i should've seen that coming" but i was too involved with the story to focus on anything but the present.

possession (1981). this might actually be the scariest movie i've ever watched. and no, it wasn't the weird creatures that definitely made the hairs on my arm stand up, and it wasn't the violent out of nowhere behavior that would typically trigger someone like me. it was one particular scene, it was the scene of at least 10 straight minutes of the actress screaming her head off, it was a perfect display of real genuine disturbia/horror and possession.

as above, so below (2014.) not only did i originally have an insane obsession with nicolas flamel, i had a very unique interest in the catacombs and demonic/ghostly possession/presence. i went into this moving thinking i wouldn't like it very much, but as it progressed, it exceeded all of my expectations and more. i enjoyed every problem, every scare, every twist, every second. every aspect of it, the investigating, the found footage, the terrifying horror.

hereditary (2018.) this is the first horror movie to genuinely terrify me and give me actual paranoia and horrible dissociation for at least three months. the first time i watched it, i shouldn't have done it alone in my large living room that resembled that exact one of the movie, nor at 11PM at night. the second time i watched it, i shouldn't have been high off my ass on 2 edibles either. because of the all together experience of being high while watching a film like this, i unfortunately got the pleasure to watch this movie as if i were in it, playing my role, and feeling all of those feelings myself, and that's why i'll forever recommend it as one of the best movie's i've seen, but definitely never rewatching.

marble hornets (youtube series.) found footage aspect, investigating aspect, paranormal aspect, murder aspect, mystery aspect, stalking aspect, woods aspect. throw my favorite things together and i have found my top favorite series.

everymanhybrid (youtube series.) i have not finished this one, however i know a bit about what happens, at least with habit. the concept that this is at least (what i'm guessing) is a soul of a murderer who possessed almost all of the insane most famous serial murderers? absolutely insane, i love it. also more with this i enjoyed than marble hornets, i enjoyed the fact there were a lot of videos with pure content of the intent of the series had. for example, evan testing out what foods before bed caused certain kinds of dreams, footage of them all together goofing off, working out, etc. however the pacing and timing after jeff's girlfriend went missing lost me. it got too confusing, i had no idea what was what or who was who, i plan to try to finish it soon.
