walking down the longest street in the world
and i saw a glimpse of the moon
right by the house i grew up in
it fundamentally changed me as a person
it made me realize that nothing is sacred
right now there are people in that house sleeping
but they don’t sleep in the same bed
they don’t eat in the same living room
they won’t have what i had
and i will never have it again
because the street is run down
the yard is overgrown
the woods are quiet and the stream of water has died over many years of depletion
back into stagnant air
back into clouds that rain and thunder
back into nothingness
because nothing is sacred
nothing
the sports bar is abandoned
the skate park got demolished
all the businesses changed or went away
still, the buildings stand as a hollow memory
if nothing else
somewhere in your destroyed town there is a girl working in the supermarket
she goes home and she reads books
she thinks her life is doomed to nothingness
though i would not change anything
she doesn’t know that sometimes i wish i was her
