Minecraft Modpacks: Why I find more fun in old ones

Modern Minecraft modpacks make me bored.

And I think many echo this sentiment. It used to be that modpacks were full to the brim with mods and experiences, with many even having quests. Some good examples are RLCraft, Stoneblock, and basically any technology modpack. These packs are fun because the mods they have are fun.

So what changed?

I think this mainly falls on the community of modders, not modpack makers. Many mods nowadays are "vanilla, but we added four and a half blocks and two keybinds!". Not all, but many. Some mods are fun and still maintained, with some examples being Mekanism, Create, Ars Nouveau, and Twilight Forest.

Ever since Minecraft began becoming more feature-filled, it seems like mod creators are hesitant to make ground-breaking content or even try newer things. There's already so many features that can be built upon that make everything seem like it could be implemented in a few years. It feels like many mod makers have this idea.

I just want mods to be fun again.

I've started playing older modpacks again, and I'm having actual fun because these mods are fun. We need to learn from the great things of the past.

I feel like another factor is how frequently Minecraft has been updating recently. Solo modders and small mod teams that make big, in-depth mods would probably have a hard time keeping up with the changes made to Vanilla Minecraft, especially if knew things are added that either need to be included in the mod in some way or end up rendering something in the mod useless. One of my favorite mods, Thaumcraft 4 (which was made for 1.7.10), would have to go through a LOT of changes if it were ever updated to current Minecraft. Even if all the Vanilla updates paused, it would probably take years to reorganize everything.
Also, add-ons were a really fun addition to old Minecraft modding. I'm not sure how many mods nowadays interlink or have fan-made add-ons, but there were SO MANY back in the day! I primarily use magic mods, and I love how all of them connect with each other and have special crafting recipes only accessible if you have other mods installed. It makes it super fun and immersive! (If you're wondering, I'm talking about Thaumcraft 4, Botania, Ars Magica, Blood Magic, Witchery, and Chromaticraft.)
I also feel like since modern Minecraft has so many new things added that feel like they came from mods, that the game already feels modded in some way. It makes quality of life mods feel more...generic. I remember a mod I used to use that added stalactites and stalagmites and glowing mushrooms and different types of caves (like ice caves) and it felt SO COOL to explore them! Seeing the ones that Minecraft has now just kinda feels...weird.

The only mods I can find with tightly knit-together add-ons are Create and Mekanism.

JUST. TWO. MODS.

I personally mainly stay on 1.12.2 and below, as 1.13+ have interesting but not amazing mods. I find the modern scene barren and sluggish, and in hindsight, more on the fault of Mojang seemingly updating every other day. New update means new modloader versions, new versions means potentially new codebase, and the cycle continues.

ONLY TWO??? Man...
I usually stick to 1.7.10 when it comes to playing with mods, though I may try some newer (or older) versions in the future if I find any mods that pique my interest enough.
Sad to see how lacking current modding is...
