****Spoilers for the ending****
So, we know that Dave is the BATMANTIS??? as revealed at the end, but I'm still not understanding the full story. Amy was tampering with the families' home security footage, assuming to delete any evidence of the BATMANTIS??? looking like a culprit. But what was the BATMANTIS??? doing in the families' houses? Was he trying to eat/hunt the maggots/fuckroaches like he did to the town's dogs?
Also, are we supposed to be okay with the fact that the "kids" (maggots) got taken back by their "families" to be slowly eat them alive? I get that not every ending tidies up neatly, but it's brutal to think about. Yes, the NON agency is supposedly monitoring the maggots to take care of them when they hatch, but why not just use the memory rewriting guns on the families of the "kids" then kill the maggots themselves?
Personally, Amy was a bit annoying in this one. I get that her being sympathetic to the "kids" is supposed to draw parallel how she is capable of loving monsters (Dave/BATMANTIS???). She was told, though, over and over again, that those "kids" aren't kids AND that they are eating the parents. Still, she calls and treats the maggots like they are actually kids, even when the fuckroaches' manipulation wasn't an excuse anymore. Repeatedly. I love Amy as a character but she really got on my nerves in this book.
Does anyone else have a clearer understanding than I do? I get the title is "What The Hell Did I Just Read?" but I would like to understand at least a little more in depth.
