Typical things for Bulgaria

1. Old people sitting on benches, spying and gossiping on every single person they know while smoking, drinking or eating sunflower seeds

2. Minors buying alcohol and cigarettes and going to bars and clubs even if the legal age for these things here is 18

3. Grandmas being into witchcraft but also being christian

4. Old people here are really conservative and if they see something modern, new or different, they say things like "It wasn't like that when we were young", "new generation is really spoiled", "When Todor Jivkov ruled the country it was better"

5. In the summer when you went to the beach there's always a gypsy or bulgarian that sells corn and screams that this is the best corn etc.

6. Physical abuse here is a normal thing for "discipline" for children and we are not protected

7. Those small corner stores that have so much foods and drinks

8. Children going and buying alcohol or cigarettes for their parents/grandparents

9. Local people love making fun of alternative people and overall everyone that's different

10. Age of consent here is 14 so it's normal to see 14-15 y/o girl with old man

11. Lots of people complain about the fact the younger generation doesn't know its own history but in school we study british, american, german, french, italian, serbian, russian and the history of many more countries

12. Older people conserving foods like cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, making jam, lyutenitsa etc.

13. Going to your grandma and she giving you tons of food because you are skinny or you haven't eaten

14. Our parents here tell us not to accept presents and money from other people so when your grandparents want to give you something, you have to hide

Most of these things may be normal in other balkan/slavic countries so lmk if some of these things are normal in your country too or tell me things that are different and normal in your country! :)

Haha, can relate to quite a lot of these since I'm from Croatia.

First, we do have old people gossiping, but it's usualy about people they know or have simply just heard things about.

Minors go to clubs all the time, but use their older friends to buy the alcohol. They do buy cigarettes and vapes by themselves though when the ladies who work at local stores let them.

Old people and conservative people here in general really hate anything that isn't Catolic. That includes witchcraft. I find it really annoying when they accuse someone of doing witchcraft, like is this the 1400s?? They are stuck in the mindset of an illiterate villager who has seen letters for the first time.

We don't have gypsies selling corn on benches, but they do sell things at the piazza since selling things without a license is illegal.

Physical abuse towards children isn't thought to be normal as much as it were in the past, though there is a certain percentage of people who still agree with the old "beatings came from heaven" thing. I wouldn't say it's rare, but it's not common either?

I haven't seen children go buy alchohol/cigs for their parents so I wouldn't know whether it happens or not.

Ah, yes. The community's relationship with alt culture. The best way to describe this is that if you go outside wearing alternative clothes, you WILL get harassed by middle school/ high school friend groups of vapers. Like, they will be yelling at you, taking photos, barking, maybe even throwing rocks if there are any available.

Age of consent here is 15, but absolutely no 15 year old girl is dating old men, at least I haven't seen it yet.

People here don't complain about kids not knowing history, they complain about them knowing English better than their own language. Which I agree with to some extent. I frequently hear kids at my school who are younger than me talk in English for absolutely no reason and their American accents are so good that I need to ask myself whether those kids are American or Croatian.

Yes, it's common to conserve food. Especially old people who have their own garden.

Grandmas like to feed their grandkids. Enough said.

Our parents teach us to say "thank you" when accepting gifts, not refusing them, that's rude.

Okay, ik that this post is more than 2 months old, but I wanted to answer your question and share some of the experiences of living in Croatia. I hope that everything was clear. Have a good day. :)
