It's April 1st, you know what that means?
That's right,
Time to listen to Avery Island/April 1st, you dolt.
Or for the sheep, it's "April Fools Day", whatever that is.
And from my time on investigating internet cultures it seems that this "holiday" or whatever it is has brought with it many events for places around the internet. Whether it be a website changing its main focus to a ridiculous one, fake news reports of something improbable, or maybe a large-scale operation to make something so real it feels disappointing for it to be a prank. But sometime after... say, the mid-2010s, it just seems like the fun factor of this "event" has begun to dwindle. Nowadays it's mostly individuals putting on a show for what little following they have, websites doing little to make something interesting, or just people passing by and doing nothing. What a strange change of pace for the internet to drop something this quickly, but why?
I think one of the last "April Fools" events I can remember online was on YouTube, actually. There was once a time when YouTube would introduce "new features" as a prank for the day, this one happened in 2016 and it was called "Snoopavision." Basically, it was a glorified react parody with Snoop Dogg of all people when he was relevant within meme communities, and I vividly remember when you clicked on the button for Snoopavision it would bring you to a page which would say that the video would be reacted to by the 2100s or farther. To 9-year old me, it was such a "waow" experience, I couldn't believe that Snoop Dogg (the funny MLG "smoke weed everyday" man at the time) would spend the rest of his life for a small gimmick. And then cut to 2024, YouTube is just same old, same old, no fun stuff, just schlock made by brainrot YouTubers or actual content instead of having a laugh with their audience. I ask again, what the hell happened since then?
