[INFO] Here in this blog post, you can find all "Songs of the Day" from 1.12. - 31.12. which i post daily in my bulletins. If you want to listen to all of them in a row I've made a playlist too! For Songs of November, click here!.
Enjoy!!
We Butter The Bread With Butter - Extrem
- Year: 2008
- Genre: Deathcore
Half the song is a single breakdown. It's always so cool when songs that are actually written out of parody and without any seriousness are still so brilliantly constructed musically. Truly extreme.
Nightkilla - Nine Circles
- Year 2013
- Genre: Dubstep
Another Newgrounds artist - that means you probably know the song by Geometry Dash. There, Nine Circles became legendary as the soundtrack to the level of the same name, because in the level editor, which was still very limited at the time, the color design of the wave section was an unprecedented masterpiece and ushered in a whole wave (haha, wave...) of "circles levels".
Horse the Band - Cutsman
- Year: 2003
- Genre: Nintendocore
Wow. I just discovered the band yesterday and have only heard the first album R.Borlax so far, but this is truly one of the best songs of the day so far. Or, I could have chosen another one from this album, it would still be extremely good, but with this one, firstly, the cut breakdown struck me so much and secondly, this outro riff, which doesn't match the key at all and is therefore so interesting becomes. Oh yeah, by the way, it's about Cutsman, a boss fight in Megaman and that's exactly what it sounds like, because "Nintendocore" is a subgenre of post-hardcore with 8-bit synths instead of a second/third guitar.
Knorkator - Narrenkappe
- Year: 1999
- Genre: Symphonic Industrial Rock
I'm an extreme Knorkator fan, I need these stupid lyrics and dramatic melodies. I know every song, but I still find it difficult to classify their music into a genre. They are most often referred to as Neue Deutsche Härte or Fun Metal, but I think for NDH many of the songs are too orchestral and complex, and "Fun Metal" is not a genre, I have no idea why people use that. Just because the lyrics are satirical? In addition, they mostly don't play metal (at least none of the typical subgenres of it). That's why I'm now inventing "Symphonic Industrial Rock", although that probably no longer applies to the newer songs.
Imogen Heap - Daylight Robbery
- Year: 2005
- Genre: Electro Pop
Many people only know one song by Imogen Heap, and many only know it as a sample: the line “mmm whatcha say, that you only meant well” from the song Hide and Seek. The entire album of these two songs Speak for Yourself is wonderful, there isn't a single weak song. Pop always has a reputation for being monotonous, but I think that only applies to radio pop.
Oh yes, a few years ago Imogen Heap also developed gloves with which you can influence the music. There's a really interesting Ted Talk from her on YouTube about it. :)
Muse - The Small Print
- Year: 2003
- Genre: Alternative Rock
Although I'm a big Muse fan, I never paid much attention to their third album Absolution. A mistake, it's awesome!
Murray Head - One Night in Bangkok
- Year: 1984
- Genre: Synthpop
aka. "The song from Flashdance that isn't even from Flashdance".
Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
- Year: 1968
- Genre: Psychedelic Rock
I've known it since I was little, through my father's CDs... it's always nice to hear songs again that you've listened to in earlier times. :)
Kamikatze - Stay in School
- Year: 2006
- Genre: Punk
I know, YouTube calls this song "Schweden Verpiss Dich", but it's "Stay in School", as you can read from the album's lyrics (see Discogs). People who know Harry Potter and a Stone will probably be familiar with this song anyway, it plays while Ron and Harry are on the train to Hogwarts. That's how I came across this band! I really have to rewatch that shit again. :D
La Dispute - Last Blues for Bloody Knuckles
- Year: 2008
- Genre: Post-Hardcore
I've already introduced you to mewithoutYou, if you like their old style you definitely have to listen to La Dispute.
Sak Noel - Loca People
- Year: 2010
- Genre: House
My grandma once found a self-burned CD on the street while out for a walk. She took it with her, cleaned it and gave it to little Martin. The rest is history. Whether I still have the CD, probably yes, but probably in an old CD folder somewhere. I really have to look for it. Anyway, the CD had a few really new songs for little Martin, I still remember Conteo by Don Omar, Tu Vivi Nell'aria by Gigi D'Agostino, the Zillertal Wedding March, Zombie Nation by Kernkraft 500, Einfach nur ein Lied by Nikitaman and Rahm by Attwenger. And of course Loca People by Sak Noel, otherwise I wouldn't be telling all this story here :D
For little Martin, these were very new and formative genres that were not intended for his children's ears (especially the Zillertaler Wedding March), but for grown up (kinda) Martin, who now listens to completely different music, it is always nostalgic to think back to this time.
Since I, as an innocent little child, didn't have that much of a curse inventory yet, and the name "Loca People" isn't very clear from the lyrics, this song was simply called "Waterfall" for me. So cute.
Haken - Somebody
- Year: 2013
- Genre: Art Rock, Neoprog
I think I even got to know Haken through Dangarus. Even though I don't know all the albums, this one (The Mountain) is almost perfect. Somebody is not the best song, rather a bit quieter and too long, but still a nice number. :)
Attwenger - Kaklakariada
- Year: 2002
- Genre: Alternative Hip-Hop, New Folk Music
Attwenger is a fun band, their songs mostly just consist of drums and accordion or synthesizer, with lyrics that are largely based on phrases that sound a bit strange when written out, like "Kaklakariada" (No small-minded person) or "Kana daham / ana alla " (No one at home / one alone) or "i&du&nuamau" (Me and you and another man). Usually the lyrics aren't about much.
But Kaklakariada is an exception, the song is directed against nationalists and backward-thinking people, and is therefore more than current, even if it has been published for 21 years.
Phil Collins / Ben Liebrand - In The Air Tonight (Remix)
- Year: 1988
- Genre: Pop
In the Air Tonight itself is a cool song, but this fairly well-known remix by Ben Liebrand makes it even better. He hasn't changed that much, the song just has a longer intro and a "Dam Dam Dam" in the chorus. By the way, it's also from a "legendary" homemade cassette made by a friend of my mother, the so-called Fritzi cassette. As a child, I got to know some really cool songs from the 80s through it. There will definitely be a few more to come!
Paramore - Misery Business
- Year: 2007
- Genre: Alternative Rock
WOOOOO I NEVER MEAN TO BRAAAAG BUT I GOT IT WHERE I WANT IN NOWWWW
sorry for the delay :P
Cheswick - The Line
- Year: 2001
- Genre: Emocore
Cheswick was a Californian band that I came across through the music blog "Drifting with the Ice". They haven't released much, just one studio album, but I think it's really good and I enjoy listening to it. :)
Laibach - Wirtschaft ist Tot (Metal Mix)
- Year: 1992
- Genre: Industrial Rock
I don't remember exactly how I came across the band Laibach, probably through the legendary cover of Life is Live ("Opus Dei"). Their style takes some getting used to, they always try to appear as edgy as possible, and they do this by satirizing nationalistic symbolism and content. In this song not so much, there are more references to Metropolis etc. Incidentally, Laibach was the first Western band to perform live in North Korea. There's even footage of it. It's very ironic how the most authoritarian country in the world looks at a band that exaggerates this style and sings a hymn to whistleblowers.
Saetia - Some Natures Carry No Plagues
- Year: 1999
- Genre: Screamo
Man, I just spent four hours making a nice booklet of Saetia's lyrics because I hate having to click and search through various lyric pages while the album is playing. Why isn't there a site that simply, no-frills, accurately reproduces song lyrics, track by track?! Oh well. At least I have them for myself now, hehe.
Jacques Rocque - Dire, Dire Docks
- Year: 2011
- Genre: Math Rock, Screamo
Very interesting, Jacques Rocque was a band active from 2011 to 2013, which only released six songs on two EPs during that time. But this November a new EP suddenly appeared. Dire, Dire Docks is from the first one and apart from the title it doesn't have much to do with the legendary soundtrack of Super Mario 64, because the song consists more or less of complex tapped riffs (math rock, obviously). I haven't heard more from the band than this song, that's not even possible because I'm discovering so much new music that I can't even really listen to one band because I already have the next one on my mind. Help xD
Sleeping with Sirens - Let Love Bleed Red
- Year: 2010
- Genre: Pop
Yes, I know, it's the 21st again. fuck it. :P
I have no idea why many people prefer the Closer2Closure version of this song (the demo, so to speak), I think the album version is a lot better.
Dimrain47 - Operation: Evolution
- Year: 2007
- Genre: Speed Trance
Since Geometry Dash 2.2 was released yesterday after what felt like an eternity (this game really influenced my taste in music), here is another artist from Newgrounds.
I don't know which Dimrain47 song I love the most, he has so many good ones, but Operation: Evolution is near Top 1. It's one of his later songs, and they have a very varied structure, in the 5 minutes there are so many different melodies and themes, again quiet parts and breakdowns and from minute 4 onwards an emotional solo as a climax. And the song is played with really simple instruments and not mixed particularly well. Dimrain47 was only ~19 years old then. And yet he created so many songs that have cult status today.
Dream Theater - Dance of Eternity
- Year: 1999
- Genre: Progressive Metal
What time signature do we want to write the song in? - Yes.
Mutual Aids Epidemic - One by Metallica by I Hate Sex by Thorn Tire by The Trees Have Eyes
- Year: 2023
- Genre: ?!
It's already the 24th anyway, so I can still make a shitpost.
The song here is basically the result of a rabbit hole that I Hate Sex opened up by naming a song One by Metallica. Other bands then joined. Song titles for screamo bands are already awful anyway, you can do that. :P
I can list the other individual songs if you would like to hear them (but they are not going into the playlist):
Metallica - One
I Hate Sex - One by Metallica
Thorn Tire - One by Metallica by I Hate Sex
The Trees Have Eyes - One by Metallica by I Hate Sex by Thorn Tire
Knorkator - Weihnachtsschimpfe
- Year: 1999
- Genre: Symphonic Rock
The only true Christmas song. I wish you a bearable celebration and relatives who leave quickly. :P
Alesana - A Forbidden Dance
- Year: 2011
- Genre: Post-Hardcore
I hope you survived Christmas Eve, have fun with the rest of the year... :P
Hail the Sun - Testostyrannosaurus
- Year: 2012
- Genre: Post-Hardcore, Math Rock
Stumbled across it by chance, I don't think I like it, but it's certainly interesting. The people in the PxHC Reddit forum seem to really like the band, but for me this song is too bland, at least in the verses, and the drums are too soft. But I think the breakdowns in the odd meters are really cool.
Pg.99 - My Application To Heaven
- Year: 2000
- Genre: Screamo
"I wish you did exist, because I'll part your ass like the red fucking sea", well that's hell of an announcement to the guy up there. I like it :P
Zwa Voitrottln - Fuck se Energiesparlampe
- Year: 2011
- Genre: Cabaret, Rap
God, it was a long time ago when light bulbs were banned in the EU... I feel like I was older then, but no, apparently not. ^^
From First To Last - The One Armed Boxer vs. The Flying Guillotine
- Year: 2004
- Genre: Post-Hardcore, Mall Screamo
Sonny's voice was so iconic... it's a shame that after FFTL's 2017 reunion there was nothing more than two, well, mediocre singles. But I'm happy about the two albums with Sonny and the later, not bad releases with Matt Good. FFTL is definitely one of my favorite bands in the genre, and Skrillex's music also influenced my childhood. I can also recommend this live recording from 2017 to you: https://youtu.be/1qO6ykINgD4
Björk - Hyperballad
- Year: 1995
- Genre: Electropop, Trip Hop
I've known Björk for quite a long time through my father's CDs, and I still think her music is great. This is my favorite song, I think.
Pink Floyd - Us and Them
- Year: 1973
- Genre: Pyschedelic Rock
Happy New Year :) I thought I would end this month quietly with the songs of the day, then this song spontaneously came to mind.^^
I've known Pink Floyd for ages and that was one of the earliest bands that got me excited about their music. Thanks dad :D
