[INFO] Here in this blog post, you can find all "Songs of the Day" from 2.11. - 30.11. which i post daily in my bulletins. If you want to listen to all of them in a row I've made a playlist too! If you wonder why it starts with the second of November, it's because I started this whole thing there.
Enjoy!!
Funeral for a Friend - The Sweetest Wave
- Year: 2007
- Genre: Alternative Rock
From the last batch of CDs I bought, "Tales Don't Tell Themselves" by FFAF was one of the best albums! And that even though, in contrast to its predecessors (which I don't know yet), it got rather bad reviews (change of style and stuff, that's really bad when a band changes style). The album is, as far as I can tell, a concept album about a fisherman who gets caught in a storm and is the only survivor, floating around and contemplating life. "The Sweetest Wave" is the last part of it. Six minutes long, very orchestral and uplifting. The album is playing on a continuous loop today and I'm happy every time the song comes on^^
Bossfight - Be Gone Mr. Gawne
- Year: 2012
- Genre: Chiptune
·
Bossfight was a Newgrounds band (now only a solo project) from Sweden, and therefore also the soundtrack to Geometry Dash, a game that had a great influence on me musically. The song is quite upbeat and melodic, but maybe that's why it seems so nostalgic and sad... I'm getting old xD
Fugazi - Give me the Cure
- Year: 1988
- Genre: Post-Hardcore
Fugazi was one of the founding bands of post-hardcore (and the genre sounded quite different and much punkier back then than in the "popular phase" from the 2000s) and 13 Songs was their first compilation album that included all the singles and demos before... one of the albums that just don't get boring, in my opinion. :)
Zorn - Endless Fantasies
- Year: 2023
- Genre: Black Metal/Crust
Zorn is a black
metal band from Germany and a black metal band from Germany, but that doesn't
matter at all, because Zorn is a black metal band from Philadelphia. They
released their first full-length album this year (and in contrast to the other
two, they do not use NS topics...).
I only came across it by chance, I'm not a BM listener, but I really liked it.
Fibonacci Sequence - Track 04
- Year: 2002
- Genre: Progressive Post-Hardcore
·
Quite little is
known about the band Fibonacci Sequence. They came from Anchorage, existed from
2000 to 2002 and had no releases other than an eight-song demo. There isn't
even any information about what the songs are called.
This is the fourth track and in my opinion the best of the demo.
Scars on Broadway - Chemicals
- Year: 2008
- Genre: Alternative Metal (?)
The build-up of this song is so unusual that you might look a little confused if you don't know it yet. That's just how it was for me back then. But actually it's not surprising that Scars on Broadway is the band of Daron Malakian, guitarist and singer of System of a Down. I don't even know if I can classify this as alternative metal, it's just something. Shit on it. Music is good.
Children of Grotesque - Geisteskrank
- Year: 2023
- Genre: Industrial Metal
·
Children of Grotesque is a relatively new and still unknown band from Berlin. I came up with this because the guitarist Tim Tom Thomas (yes, that's his real name) is the son of Knorkator keyboardist and singer Alf Ator (I love Knorkator, as stupid as they are^^). Anyway, a few months ago they recorded three or four of their songs professionally in the studio and made music videos for them. And Geisteskrank “Mentally Ill” is one of them. Not necessarily the most profound text, but it sets the mood. ^^
Aiden - Looking Glass Eyes
- Year: 2006
- Genre: Post-Hardcore
·
Yes, a little bit later today (the day is over in 1 1/2 hours haha), I was a little sick and also... forgot. What else is there to say... Aiden, cool band, nice first album, I can recommend it. By the way, the hidden track on this CD has a hidden track!
Die Ärzte - Zu spät
- Year: 1984
- Genre: Pop Punk
·
Yes, just read it in another post and thought why not as a song of the day?^^ That was the first song from Die Ärzte that I got to know; it was always sung as the last song around the campfire at an Alpine camp. I hated it back then, but I don't remember why :P
Sigur Rós - Flugufrelsarinn
- Year: 1999
- Genre: Post Rock
·
If you want to be a guitarist but have only learned the violin. No, but honestly, if you don't know Sigur Rós, you're missing out. It's hard to compare the music. Very sharp tones that sound like braking trains or microphone feedback or ambience from horror films... but played so gently and delicately that it has a calming effect again.
A Heartwell Ending - You're my Dream Catcher
- Year: 2006
- Genre: Post Hardcore
YES, I know it's already the 13th, I was just busy... shit on it, no one's listening anyway :P
Heartwell Ending was a short-lived American band that released a demo and an album. Pretty poppy songs, also catchy tunes. They have somehow fallen into “forgetfulness” again, at least when it comes to views on YouTube. Back then, YT wasn't that popular and everything was listened to on MySpace, then MySpace crashed and the less popular YouTube videos remained, is my thesis. I definitely have the album on CD at home, but I don't know if it's still available as new...
The Äth - Wie zwei Delfine in der Nacht
- Year: 2018
- Genre: German 2000s Ringtone Kitsch Core
The Äth (or The Ath) is a band from my neighboring village that has been around for over 20 years and is actually a rap metal/death metal band that is very experimental. They sing about things like the 2021 flood specifically in Hallein or how the Schlenken is the ugliest mountain in the world, or about a high-tech farmer with 200 Kiah und Kybernetik-Power (so yeah, very rural rap metal overall)...
On today's song or on the entire self-titled album THE ATH they try completely different things. In the song they probably made it their mission to create the most unbearably cheesy 2000s Jamba ringtone sound with rap/Eurotrance passages (the title already sounds like that). It also succeeded, somehow.
My Chemical Romance - Honey, this Mirror isn't Big Enough for the Two of Us
- Year: 2002
- Genre: Pop Punk
Who is behind schedule? Me. Maybe I should do the “two songs of two days” series if this continues.
Anyway, this is the quasi-theme song of MCR's first record, which is often overlooked (they only have four, how does that work?). Like almost everywhere, this one is more raw and that's exactly what I like about debut albums.
Skero - Pistenkanone
- Year: 2015
- Genre: Rap
·
Rap is not my top 1 music genre, but when it comes to legendary Austrian artists like this, I have to make an exception. It's also a really funny song about skiing (and getting hurt :P ).
Karfagen - Levitation
- Year: 2020
- Genre: Neo Prog
·
You just have to look at the album cover and you immediately know that this is a really cheesy prog song. And that's exactly true, but cheesy doesn't mean bad, not at all. Sometimes you need that type of music to take you on an exciting but peaceful journey. At least I do. Karfagen’s songs are perfect for this. It is one of many projects by the keyboardist and singer Antony Kalugin, and he really has a lot of songs like this in his catalog, 14 Karfagen albums, 8 albums as "Sunchild" (same principle, just more vocal-oriented), 5 solo albums and a few additional ones with other projects. It all sounds somewhat similar, but you don't have to hear everything at once.
Poison the Well - Midair Love Message
- Year: 1999
- Genre: Metalcore
·
The Opposite of December... A Season of Separation is not only a long, stupid album title (as it should be ;) ), but also one of the most influential metalcore albums ever. This is my favorite song from it, I'll say, because actually all the songs are 10/10. You can also clearly hear the loud/quiet change here; you could also say there are three short songs in three minutes. But as I said, I can only recommend the whole album to you, firstly because you should generally consume music more in the form of albums than playlists, secondly because there are really nine perfect classic metalcore songs in 28 minutes.
mewithoutYou - King Beetle on a Coconut Estate
- Year: 2009
- Genre: Folk Rock, Post-Hardcore
I'm not sure if the lyrics of the song are inspired by a real parable or not, but a burning pile of leaves symbolizes God. The King of Beetles first sends his people to find out what the flames are, but after no one can explain it satisfactorily, he sets out himself, figures out that the flames are a higher power and ends up burning.
I can't explain it that well myself, I'm not religious either, but it's really interesting to look at mewithoutYou's texts and interpretations. And I love the emotional rhymes and melodies. Also interesting is the change in style after the first two or three albums to folk rock or art rock. You can hear this very well, for example, in the songs “Bullet to Binary” and “Bullet to Binary Pt. 2”.
This time I wrote a little more, this band simply fascinates me. By the way, I'm also curious what you think about the songs (in general)!
The Saddest Landscape - In Love with the Sound
- Year: 2012
- Genre: Screamo
·
I'm lazy today and don't write much :P
Beautiful song, great band and wonderful album. It was also in my last CD order ^_^
Deadmau5 - Creep
- Year 2014
- Genre: Progressive House
Someone once said that 7/4 was just a fancy waltz. And somehow that's true, but this time signature usually only appears in overcomplicated, nerdy prog rock or metal songs. Here in this quiet instrumental, which sounds a bit like Minecraft music, the beat is used in such a way that it's not noticeable at all. It's really just a waltz with a short extra break. In contrast to the calm piano there is a thrilling, glitchy drum rhythm that also becomes increasingly intense. The name Creep fits perfectly.
Dot Dot Curve :) - Rocketship to the Moon
- Year: 2008 or 2009
- Genre: Crunkcore
Finest scene shit from 2008 or something, I didn't find out exactly the release date of this version (the album release was in 2009, but this one has a video and I like it better too).
The whole style of music was laughed at then as now (yes, somehow rightly so, it's just so cringy xD), but you can't deny the influence it had on today's genres like trap metal or hyperpop or autotune rap in general. Dot Dot Curve, BrokeNcyde and The Medic Droid are still legendary bands today. The first two even still exist!
By the way, can anyone name a crunkcore song without "fuck" or "freak" in the lyrics? He gets a cookie.
From Autumn to Ashes - Reflections
- Year: 2001
- Genre: Metalcore
Another song from an album that is perfect from start to finish. Varied, but not confused. "Too Bad You're Beautiful" consists of songs, some of which are quite long, whose genres range from screamo to metal, post-hardcore, metalcore and acoustic emo and alternate between clear, calm and aggressive, shouted passages. Be sure to hear everything. Same with this song, it builds up for two and a half minutes with an acoustic guitar/drums intro until it takes off like a volcanic eruption. The fact that the entire song is seven and a half minutes long (not even the longest on the album) isn't even noticeable.
Moss Icon - Happy (Unbounded Glory)
- Year: 1994
- Genre:
Post-Hardcore
Moss Icon was also a seminal band in the '80s and '90s that greatly contributed to the emergence of the emo subgenre. What I like about the songs of these early bands is that they often rely on really simple, repetitive basslines that set the mood. Same here, and those ambient guitar sounds... I love that.
The Sorrow - The Dagger Thrust
- Year: 2007
- Genre: Metalcore
·
Sooo, actually Auro suggested to me to use the first metalcore song that came to mind, and that would have been Burial Bridge by the same band. Unfortunately there wasn't an audio-only version on YouTube, or I was too stupid to find it, so I chose this as a replacement. Probably no one is complaining anyway. Have fun, good song, good album, good band.
Heart - Crazy on You
- Year: 1976
- Genre: 70s Classic Rock
Today there is a bit of a different genre, not everything always has to end with -core... although I used to listen to "more" classic rock and metal (but only superficially), I only heard about the band Heart a few months ago. The intro of this song has somehow become a meme.
Wintersun - Beyond the Dark Sun
- Year: 2004
- Genre: Power Metal, Melodic Death Metal
It could be that I'm wrong, but Wintersun is a band that only a few people know, but then again many people know. I know that contradicts itself. But it seems that way to me. Also, it's more of a solo project than a band. And I've never seen anyone who doesn't like them.
Please excuse the delay!
Jack Off Jill - Strawberry Gashes
- Year: 2000
- Genre: Punk Rock, Alternative Rock
Unfortunately, I don't remember how I came across the band, and Strawberry Gashes is the only song I know from them, but I think someone once had it playing in the background on their SpaceHey profile page... luckily I saved it, it's a really good song, from a band that unfortunately never made it to "higher heights" because before they could establish themselves, they had to break up again due to personal differences and a lack of commercial success.
Serj Tankian - Pop Imperialism
- Year: 2022
- Genre: Art Pop
·
Although I really
like Serj Tankian as part of System of a Down, I don't like his work as a solo
artist as much, with a few exceptions. One of them is this song from his EP
Perplex Cities. In general I like quiet, industrial-like drums, does anyone
know any other bands or songs?
Wolfgang Ambros - Heite drah i mi ham
- Year: 1975
- Genre: Symphonic Pop, Austropop
Austropop
is nothing other than pop and rock (actually the genre doesn't matter
at all) that comes from Austria and somehow has an audible connection to
it. So Seiler and Speer are Austropop, Christina Stürmer is German pop.
The founders of this genre also included Wolfgang Ambros and Joesi Prokopetz, who wrote his texts. And if you don't have anything to do with it today and you see it or hear the name, you might think, "old, boring music." But in my opinion that's not true, especially the early albums by the well-known Austropop musicians are really strong both musically and lyrically.
Marschak - Gilles De La Tourette Syndrome
- Year: 2003
- Genre: Screamo
·
I don't know much about the band Marschak, except that they are one of the most famous Russian screamo bands. I also believe that they don't exist anymore, firstly because screamo bands rarely last longer than two or three years and secondly because the last album came out in 2009... I can actually recommend the whole first album, I don't know the second album that well, but it's certainly not bad either. :) I apologize for my absence again, this time for three days... I didn't always feel like it and I really had a lot to do (beer), especially on Saturday.
