Persuader - The Hunter

Category: Music

Power metal in the last few years has become quite stale for the last few years. I remember a time when a goofy band like Gloryhammer was effectively a breath of fresh air of careless, self-aware but also heartfelt poking at tropes type of fun. I still have a soft spot for their first three albums, but the last album left me quite wanting. The problem arose when a shitton of bands started to add i... » Continue Reading

Dark Tranquillity — The Gallery

Category: Music

I need to call out the most obvious thing which is—are we fucking even serious here? Is contrarianism such an addictive drug that we end up in a situation where “Projector”, an inferior album, ends up with a way higher score than “The Gallery”? I get that it’s not going to be up to everyone’s tastes, but holy shit do some people need to get a grip. What, you’re mad that a band did not sacrifice me... » Continue Reading

King Diamond - The Puppet Master

Category: Music

"Now, let the show begin!" When it comes to concept albums, one must thread a careful line. Not so much in whether or not does story make sense (although Rhapsody proved it certainly adds to the charm) but rather in how well the music conveys the sense of plot progression. In a sense, concept album is not much different from the opera. Focus is not so much on the acting and story, but rather in ho... » Continue Reading

Album Of The Year Rankings

Category: Music

I admit, it is kinda early to call it since it's only beginning of December but there have been no releases slated in this month at least so I think I can fairly assure myself that there will be no surprises until the year. Not like anything is gonna top the number one pick anyway. This year overall can be considered a year of comebacks and old guards, as five of these were dropped by already esta... » Continue Reading

Blind Guardian - Nightfall In Middle Earth

Category: Music

Phenomenal. That's it, that's all I would need to say in regard to this album and it would be enough. However, I absolutely love to yap about things I like so I find it fitting to describe exactly WHY this album is so phenomenal and why is it considered one of watershed power metal records and oft considered Blind Guardian's best work, albeit with a caveat that I am one of those who champions "Ima... » Continue Reading

Intestine Baalism - Banquet In The Darkness

Category: Music

And now for something completely different Last time I talked about Insomnium, the melancholy, the cold days of November and December and rainy clouds. This time we will be talking about ghouls, we will be talking about evil, we will be talking about ancient cannibalistic cults and gore. We will also be talking about Intestine Baalism, a Japanese melodic death metal band from Tokyo. Although if I ... » Continue Reading

Insomnium - In The Halls Of Awaiting (my first review here)

Category: Music

Finland is a very nice country. It's large, has a lot of forest, thousands of lakes and is also home to genuinely some of the most phenomenal metal bands to ever walk the planet Earth. In particular focus is my personal favorite, Insomnium. Insomnium are a melodic death metal band. Especially on earlier albums, strong influence from Dark Tranquility can be felt (melodic, almost Maiden-esque leads ... » Continue Reading
