I'm travelling to California, Japan, and South Korea this year!! - any tips or ideas?

Hi! This will be my first time travelling outside of the US!! I'm getting my passport soon too! Does anyone have any travel tips specifically for Japan or South Korea? Btw, I don't speak a word of Japanese or Korean :(. So does anyone have any tips on travelling when you don't know the language?
