Hbomberguy posted a new video essay yesterday and it is almost 4 hours long, I finally finished it today. This video is about plagiarism on youtube, pointing out examples of several incredibly popular creators who have stolen content.
I have been a fan of his for many years, way before his popularity boomed with his donkeykong stream (also where the infamous 'TEETHGANG' meme spawned) so I actually had seen his original plagiarism video from years ago multiple times. I LOVED his revisiting of someone he talked about in the first video at the very start of this one.
One of the other creators he talks about is the Internet Historian, who I've seen a few of his videos but I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of him. His fans are going absolutely wild on Twitter, you would think he's in a large section but no its relatively small compared to other chapters. If learning he plagiarized a popular video didn't make me lose respect for him than seeing his fans move in droves trying to defend it and insult Hbomberguy sure does.
The biggest chapter is him talking about James Somerton, a queer video essayist. Now I WOULD say I was a fan of his before the video. I haven't watched every single one of his videos but I've seen a lot, I think I discovered him from his Killing Stalking video which is kind of old. Hearing Hbomberguy tear into him for his content stealing, weird sexist comments, and arrogance about him being the most 'important queer voice' on youtube was very shocking but also satisfying. All of this was especially shocking to me because I actually cited James Somerton in an essay I wrote for school once because I actually trusted that he was saying something unique and correct. While I got some kudos for using a video as a source I can't help but regret it in hindsight.
