Something I Realized About My AOTY, HUMAN by Nitepunk

It's pretty much just one big allegory for a breakup.

BEAR WITH ME HERE, but I love overanalyzing lyrics and stuff like that and last night while listening to this masterpiece of an album I had an epiphany: Most of the songs, at least the ones with lyrics, represent different stages of a breakup.

Here's my thinking:

  • I Know That You Know represents the sense that something feels off ("I know that you know there's something 'bout the tempo")
  • MTV might represent a sense of ignorance and narcissism in the character's beloved (seen in this lyrical block here)

"My dirty kicks and my confidence
I'm wrapped in gold chains, get off me
Please run ya mouth, just give me a reason
I need to get my blood pumpin'
I don't ever give no second chances
You better hit the panic button right now
I'm comin' in hot, yeah, thе fire burnin'
I'ma heat stroke so you know it's lights out"

  • Spider may represent the relationship getting heated ("You wanna fight? I can get a lil' crazy." and "Do you mind closin' the door, generalize the downpour," The latter representing the fact that this conflict can be resolved by the beloved straight up leaving)
  • I'm Not Yours and You're Not Mine represents the mindset that "Yeah, we're pretty much done," also representing the fact that the main character's beloved is thinking about other people, as seen with the lyric blocks

"And if there's someone else that's on your mind
I don't got to know, oh, oh
We don't need to talk about it
Not ‘till tomorrow
'Cause I don't care about your other girls
When you're with me"

"There's no hidin' what's inside or where we find it
Our dimensions, they collide
But I'm not yours and you're not mine"

  • Too Hot to Touch not only re-establishes the beloved's sense of narcissism ("I'M TOO HOT TO TOUCH RIGHT NOW!") but it also establishes a difference in attitudes, as heard with the sample, presumably the main character talking with someone about their beloved's different attitude to them.

"We're not, like, you know, we're havin' fun bein' cool and he's uh, he's just doin' different stuff. I think having girlfriends is okay, but you know we like to party, right? Guys like him, they don't like to party, but we do, you know?

  • Move Ahead may represent the beloved moving on (Keep this in mind when we talk about Better Off)
  • Black and Colors may represent the beloved finding someone else ("Waves flowing around free, color me in love,")
  • Better Off very obviously represents the main character's mindset of "Yeah, it's better this way." also throwing salt in the wounds of the beloved as seen with the lyric block

"I'm standin', I'm standin' here alone
While you, you just keep movin' on (I told you to keep it in mind)
But don't you count me out, yeah
cus I, I've been down and out, hey,
but now, Now that I'm standin' here, here on my own
I'm finally finding out, yeah
that I, I'm better off alone"

  • One more thing about Better Off, the description of the music video states that "Only good memories matter in the end." While this could be a reference to the fact that the music video is a collection of good memories from the album's making of, which is perfect considering that it's the last song on the album, it could also be a reference to the main character's mindset that even though they and the previously beloved are broken up, "Only good memories matter in the end."

So yeah, there's my rant about my IMO Album of The Year, HUMAN by Nitepunk, and its hidden meanings.
