“Goodbye”
You miss the time when
Your wrists were marked from,
Not razors,
But swing set chains that bruised your arms
Every time you yelled “Higher, higher!”
But you weren’t aware of how true it was
Until your girlfriend tells you how much she misses your sobriety.
You think of song lyrics to sing for your children
But there’s no way they’ll ever work,
You’re such a shitty writer anyway.
That’s what you thought
Until your daughter walks up to you and asks you,
“Dad, how come we never see grandma?”
And you don’t respond.
Not until your pen hits the paper
And you remember how much you miss your mother.
How imperfect she was but she always took care of you.
The way she held your hand on the first day of Kindergarten.
The comfort she provided when you got bullied.
The hug she gave you after graduation.
Even the key-lime pie she baked for your family…
It was all so important.
And you regret taking her for granted.
You wish you could go back and care for her more.
Do her shopping, pay her bills, be a good son.
But you weren’t strong enough.
Your son left as soon as he turned 16
And he made it very clear that
You still aren’t strong enough.
And you never will be.
So as you sit on your bed in your final moments,
The utter regret fills your lungs.
The longing for difference.
Maybe if your dad wasn’t such an asshole,
You could be better than him…
But you aren’t.
And you can’t change the past.
And you will never make a difference.
So, farewell.
No one will miss you.

As my first post here, I wanted to share a poem I wrote about a year and a half ago. I'll leave it up to your interpretation. :D
