Will SpaceHey survive (the crew thread)

Obviously, I think there are huge reasons to want this to work and stick around. Is it working? Are folks you know IRL getting on or does that not matter at all to you?

It is eating into the time I spend elsewhere on social media and I'm seeing good interaction here but IRL adaption isn't happening in my networks. That seems to be okay, if the platform will continue to outperform in other ways like organic discovery.

Curious to hear what others think.

Probably the best thing about this site is the customization, it makes it more individual and less standardized. Also, it just feels more personal than other social media, idk what is it but it does

Just musician here. No coding ability, itโ€™s all focused around making music, but SpaceHey is great for hanging out safely, no bots/spam/trolls/etc. Been neglecting FB, which is great! Over 100k users, too๐Ÿ–ค

agreed my dude. getting more people to see and interact with things here vs fbook, too! that's a great sign. folks who want community are here.

I think they need to integrate image hosting, like MySpace used to have. People tend to be visual, and like to look at and share photos from their day... as opposed to read only posts. Third party hosting works well enough, but not everyone wants to bother with that.

The whole "no instant messaging" thing plus the anonimity and custom css/html is making me feel a lot safer here than on other social platforms, just like when I used to surf the internet back in high school, so yeah I think as long as there's people like us here, this platform will survive.

not getting spammed by bots is pretty nice

I guess it depends a lot on what we define as "surviving".

It clearly has a niche of users that no other social platform was serving adequately, and given how everything is right now, I don't think ever will.

So as long as those people exist, there's a place for SpaceHey.

i'm with ya. i think it survives but i wonder if it hits the threshold to move into the minor social media circle. one of the folks a week ago said they checked around 55,000 members setup, with a few thousand adding a day.

so that's certainly a good start!

Secretly hoping it goes beyond that, but not counting on it.

I actually wrote a long blog post about why SpaceHey is special to me and stuff if you want to check it out! It's not metrics, but it might give context.

Fresh Response

I only discovered this site today. I've been slowly migrating to the federated services like Mastodon, PixelFed, and Diaspora. I have not yet seen any widespread adoption of any new platforms. TikTok is growing fast and so is the audio only one clubhouse I think is the name.

For me, I like to be able to find others with similar interests and work from there. It's like having a neighborhood bar. You go there often enough and you develop a social circle, instead of the other way around where you and your friends meet up and go to a place together.

Just my take, I really like the nostalgia factor here though.

Welcome to the platform! The nostalgia factor is really good. Think the neighborhood bar is a good comparison, too.

Folks are here. At least they have that going for now. The amount of customization you can do vs Facebook is pretty spiffy, too.
