Book Review Videos I Enjoy!

In this blog post, I will include links to videos I have watched that either discuss the plot of a book/series of books,, or the behavior (good or bad) of authors, and a little blurb of what the video is about.

This is mostly for me just to kind of have a place to look back at them, but i guess for others to check out what I've been watching lol.

will edit/update as i decide what videos i wanna throw on this list.

1.) an unnecessarily thorough recap of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY (from a lesbian) - shitty book club https://youtu.be/ICIpuC3B7Rs?si=FqrZxltk96ac9i29

As someone who was a child during the big boom of 50 Shades (about middle school age during the movies being made), i never really read them. Though as a 20 year old now, i had an idea of some of the contents sex wise, I had no idea about all the weird trauma shit that the characters go through. Reading the books to just see what everyone (including my own mother) was reading and watching back then, is something I've been debating on for years anyway. So watching this was a good stepping stone in preparing myself for what to expect.

2.) the selection is one of the WORST book series (and i absolutely love it) - shitty book club https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WENMrl_wNw

Another book series I never got around to reading (i have very vague memories of reading like maybe 10 or less pages of the first book like a decade ago and then stopping) but even after watching this and basically knowing the whole jist, I still intend of giving it a read anyway. She goes well over the plot of the 3 book series while also pointing out all the shit that is really kind of weird about it (especially for a YA novel series, of which i personally know people who read it in MIDDLE SCHOOL)

3.) Nate Lemcke | AUTHORS BEHAVING BADLY - Reads with Rachel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNYqIyVimKE

Author Nate Lemcke claims to be a feminist yet doesn't listen when many women tell him his behaviors are inherently misogynistic. He writes a weird book about a middle-aged dude with a p*rn addiction who becomes obsessed with his young woman cam girl neighbor. He tries promoting it on TikTok by saying he'll read one book written by a "female" author until his book is on the best-seller list. lots of unexpected weird conspiracy and "oh so deep" bullshit.

4.) Redeeming Love is THE WORST book - Reads with Rachel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRB4_D4EJjU

Rachel talks about a very bad book written but a fundamental Christian author. It is often given to young fundie girls as a "guide to what romance should be" and it is honestly a disgusting book. Terrible viewpoints and honestly insulting writing on people with dwarfism, native americans, s*x work/traffickers, victims of abuse, marital r*pe, r*pe in general, etc. Rachel makes the discussion of this book palatable and i applaud her for that.

5.) Matt Shaw | AUTHORS BEHAVING BADLY - Reads with Rachel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0IXLAPQGyM

Actually one of the first of any BookTube videos i watched since i started doing so this week. Matt Shaw is a fucking vile human piece of shit. He is an author of extreme horror, which in itself is not bad, but he is someone who cannot take criticism of his work and is far too involved in review spaces. As Rachel reiterates in many of her videos, reviews are for the reader, not the author. He was so butthurt over a booktuber's review of one of his books, that he dedicated a smutty book to her and she didn't find out until 5 months after the fact and had never spoken to him until that point. he also has written revenge p**n about a famous woman. (i will not mention her name here, it is discussed in the video, and much like Rachel says, i do NOT want to discuss that whole mess.)
